Innovative Recycling

You know, I was looking at this picture of my backyard and realized, wow, I’ve been pretty thirsty over the years. It got me concerned. What if everyone’s backyard was as filled as mine?

It’s time for a change. We need to focus innovation and creativity toward reuse and recycling.

Thanks to my new fashion line offering gang necklaces with old garage door and car openers, we’ll be saving valuable acres of barren desert from more of our garbage and we can look really stupid at the same time. Win-win!

I had thought about refurnishing my new home with more furniture that looked really striking but that wouldn’t be the responsible thing to do. There are great alternatives that reuse instead of create and in the process, they provide their own unique look and feel. Take this first example. Rather than throw away old boxing gloves, I get a comfy chair instead.

One chair isn’t going to do it though. My next chair is made from recycled bicycle tubes and is quite comfortable (just make sure you don’t get poked where you pump them up though).

But I could do more…

What about those household items that get trashed over the years? Why I can have some trendy clocks instead

But I could do more…

The amount of CDs we throw out is staggering. Surely there’s something I can do with these? I know, the world needs more disco balls. How about making them out of old CDs?

But I could do more…

Old phone booths take up a lot of room and the full size walk in ones like you used to see in London have been replaced with more modern (cheaper) open options. Nobody wanted the homeless sleeping in them anyway. With a little refurbishing, I turned one into a lovely wine storage. Now I am the home fashion talk of the town.

But I could do more…

Time to get seriously innovated. You know all those old VW vans that nobody can seem to keep running and probably shouldn’t for the environments sake anyway? Well, I’ve converted one to a more fashionable recreative use. It goes well with my wine storage booth. Here is a picture of it just before I moved it to the home:

But I could do more…

Instead of buying yet another bench for my workshop, I used a large overstock of pencils to provide the perfect seating option. Plus, if I have a mark on the butt of my pants, it provides the perfect erasing mechanism and they come right out.

But I could do more….

Trash when used innovatively, can be turned into art. It’s been done before, sure, but I thought these two ideas were quite slick and very artistic.

This first one uses all of those Rubik cubes that kids inevitably get frustrated with and throw out. I sort of uses the concept of pixilation to create a bigger picture. Check it out:

The next one uses some of the thousands of cans I’ve shamelessly consumed to form a very familiar painting. I thought this would be a good project at those science and art places that have hands on activities for kids 4 to 100. You know, create this one and provide a few large bins of multicolored cans and encourage others to create their own masterpieces.

But I could do more…

Why not take these bottles and build an entire home from them? Now that’s really using existing resources!

But I could do more…

There are a lot of old dolls and doll parts that are just filling up our land fills. Why not make them into an alternative source of clothing?

Ok, maybe that is taking it a bit too far…

That doll suit is the best! Where do you find this stuff?! You clearly have too much time on your hands.

If they're not using the top half of that VW, I'd like to make another pool table out of that.

kurt - Good idea, two pool tables for the price of one dilapated VW van!

If this is what going green means, I'm afraid I'm going to have to go crimson. The furniture and the bling just don't do a thing for me. Ditto the art, and I don't drink enough to need wine storage. I'd be scared to sit on the pencil bench, too. With my luck, they'd be wrong-end up. I do like the disco ball. The clocks are kind of cool - though I'd probably hurt myself with them. The doll suit? It's a bit "Goya" and would give me nightmares for sure. I think I'll go see what's in my closets and drawers that can be collaged, bronzed, and/or turned into jewelry.:)

The doll suit would scare my kids and my dogs would eat it. The pencil bench..well, if one of those things broke while you were sitting on it.....

However, I would LOVE to have one of the boxing glove chairs so whenever my husband irritates me, I could hit him with it:)

I have to say that the VW pool table is pretty creative. That could be marketed to some trendy bar or pool hall.

hew - I'll go visit...

barry - Yeah, and you'd look smashing wearing the doll suit while you play...

So in that first picture I see more blue than red. So the debate is over, Pepsi beats Coke...

This is just subliminal advertising isn't it VE, you are getting paid by Pepsi and you don't even have to set your hair on fire.

VE said...

kelley - Good catch. I always drink Pepsi over Coke. Coke is for Santa Claus. Oh, and I like having my hair on fire; can't I keep that part?
