UnBelizeable - The Cayes

There are many great things about Belize:

- It's not really that far away
- It's not really that expensive
- The official language is English
- Nobody tries to sell you things when you walk around
- With the exception of Belize City you'll feel safe everywhere

Belize means "swamp water". Man, it sounded so nice until I knew that. Actually, much of the low lands of the country are swampy. Belize is also part of the mainland. It is not an Island as so many people think.

We stayed on the Cayes for the first part of our trip. Cayes are simply small islands just off the mainland. We stayed at Caye Caulker. It's a much less developed island; lots of backpackers and laid back people there.

We had to get there from Belize City via this...a water taxi. It's a 45 minute boat ride to get there. Don't sit toward the front if you get sea sick. The water isn't that rough but it is hot under there.

Once there, we checked in to this place. Right on the beach; one of only two places with a pool on the island. This is a small island with very small hostels and accomodations. Perfect for relaxation.

The streets are sand and they get around by bicycle and electric golf cart. It's mostly filled with restaurants, hostels and small places to stay, dive shops, gift shops, and an occasional small store.

The food was quite good. This is a fish dish we had. Fresh lobster was in season right as we got there too.

Other than working on your tan, reading, taking a dip in the pool, eating or just walking around the main thing to do it head just off the island for snorkeling. Even a half mile out the water is only about 5-10 feet deep and aquamarine.

It's home to the second largest coral reef on the planet and there were a lot of rays, barracuda, and nurse sharks among other sea creatures that could be found.

Next up...on to the mainland and into the jungles

Wow! I’m so envious of you right now!

My question, did you fear the stingrays now knowing that they have become hunters of humans? ;o)

Very Cool! Did you take that underwater photo? I've used those disposable underwater cameras and they're pretty good.

Those photos are awesome--I also would like to know who took them. Can't wait to read/see more of the trip!

I am officially jealous!! I would love to be there, reading and snorkeling.

And the picture of that ray is awesome!! I can clearly remember when we lived in South Florida (when I was a kid), we we would go to Key Largo and swim at this one beach. It was so much fun to put on my snorkeling mask and just sit under the water at watch the rays swim around.

Looking forward to more pictures....

hooray for YOU! oh i cant wait for the jungles post. your meal looks like breakfast in costa rica. i sould live in belize -mr she loves to dive- i am, alas, only a snorkler. but in water like that its good enough! enjoy it VE!

It sounds wonderful - I had no idea. Had never considered Belize as a vacation spot.
Not so sure about a venture into the jungle though...

You are right about Belize City - It's just not a nice place. Great photos - I'm getting all mellowed out just looking at them.

All of those clear blues and greens are dazzling. The food is making me hungry.

This isn't funny!

Nice pics, tho.

bee - I didn't worry; I'm sub-human. It's sort of like super-human but much lazier...

red mojo - Underwater shots are getting better but many of my shots, particular when I was shooting in caves didn't come out well without some tweaking

mrs r - I took the shots..well, not the map ones of course. Lots more to come

jacki - Would have made me nervous watching Rays swim around. I mean Ray Charles was blind. And Ray Stevens wrote that Streak song...I don't want to know how he swims around. No, there are many Rays I don't want to see underwater

jeffery - Yes, I highly recommend it. Just retire now and get started early.

she - I am alas only a snorkeler too. The thought of equipment malfunction keeps me from diving. I have to many things happen to me to tempt those odds.

beth - Don't worry about the jungle; you'll find it surprisingly appealing as I'll show in the next few posts

quickroute - I can't remember, did you go to any of the Cayes on your trip there?

nessa - You should have seen this lobster the snorkle guide pulled out from this rock...it was the biggest I've ever seen. We left him alone though...plenty of properly caught lobster back at the restaurants

kurt - I know, I know. It's hard to be funny when writing about the Cayes. It's just too laid back. I've got some funny stuff for the mainland portion.

how gorgeous, out of the way, seemingly not inundated by tourists. you may be ruining a good thing by telling us how great this place is!

VE said...

lime - Yeah, you have to do your homework because San Pedro is another Caye off Belize and it is much more built up and touristy than I wanted; other people actually prefer that so you've got options when going there.

I so do NOT like getting in the ocean - more power to you!

And I kid you not when I tell you I have a room in my house painted "swamp water". I have now renamed the room The Belize Room.

THANKS!

Wonderful photos..almost likebeing there...almost. I don't dive, but do snorkel and would love to visit there...

Can't wait to see the jungles..

HUGS!

Well damn that looks awesome! Almost worth the hassle of travel. If I didn't live in Miami, I would be jealous.

Anette said...

Oh I bet all your batteries are charged now after a trip like that.
I'm not at all jealous, I love sitting at work, looking out of my window, watching the rain... sigh! that was a lie I'm afraid.
But you totally deserve it, as long as you share it with us!

VE said...

queen goob - Glad I could provide room naming services...

leelee - No diving for me either

kan - Yeah, yeah, but how often do you really leave Miami and go down to the keys to snorkel?

VE said...

anette - I know about summer rain; I live in Oregon...

Pictures. Yay! It really does look like a little piece of Paradise. I'd love to spend some time there.:)

VE said...

sj - Pictures it is! But now Kurt says I should be funny as well as provide pictures. Boy...what standards I have placed on me! ;)

Lori said...

Oooo - I want to go there.....

I didn't know these things about Belize, and I'm officially J.E.A.L.O.U.S.

At least I'm not reading this in the dead of winter during a snowstorm.

Megan said...

Yeah, I'd go there.

Yes, my name is Arizona said...

That's beautiful. I could really use a vacation right now, too...

I haven't been here in a few days and forgot that you were traveling.
Thanks for sharing the photos!

Anyway, wonderful pics and vacation!...G

Wow. Looks beautiful. I look forward to being able to do some traveling when my house is finally done....

Alex L said...

I don't Belize it... wow, if I'm the first one to do that joke I'm sorry, if I'm not I make no apologies. Nice pics though!

doggybloggy said...

I had a lot of catching up to do but since your writing style is so bouncy I was able to plug along at 3 miles an hour and get it all read.....

NYD said...

Vacation, really? The place looks just like Seattle to me.

Feigned nonchalance.

VE said...

lori - Me too...oh wait, I was there...now I want to go back.

angie - See how much you learn here? I didn't know a lot of it either, I'll admit it...

anndi - I'm not that cruel. Well, I am but I just couldn't pull the kids out of school to do so

megan - Do I have to twist your arm?

arizone - Well if you don't have time, I take vactions for people that cannot.

chris - Haven't been here in a few days? Why that is inconceivable!

kelley - Better than a jerk off!

g-man - No...I have a camera phone and have never actually used it

colby - It was!

diesel - And when will you finish that? 2014? I think Belize will still be a country then...

alex - It's ok. They use that all the time there.

doggybloggy - But that's good news because I didn't even think I had a writing style!

nyd - No, I've been to Seattle and they stopped using sand for their streets as the rain would create quicksand!

C said...

WOW! Sooooooooooooo jealous right now! Those photos are great! Looks like you had an excellent time. That underwater photo is spectacular!

Can't wait to see more photos :)

VE said...

c - And you shall see more photos. I took a lot!

Gorgeous, clear water. I used to scuba dive in the Philippines in water like that. Have a fantastic shot of me swimming with a big ol' manta ray.

VE said...

teri - Where in the Philippines? I've been to Borocay. Another beautiful place...

Sarah said...

Everyone I know who has gone to Belize comes back saying things like, "You better belize it!" haha - you too huh?!

I also thought it was an island, now I feel dumb :)

VE said...

sarah - But it's just so catchy! It's like watching the Big Lebowski and not finding yourself saying "dude"...

Quickroute said...

re: "..I can't remember, did you go to any of the Cayes on your trip there?" - Yes we went to the southern cayes or Placencia to be exact - beautiful place although people rave about the northern cayes more!

VE said...

quickroute - Interesting. I hadn't done any research about the southern cayes. They must have been quiet and fairly undeveloped...

Bonnie the Boss said...

Cool pic of the Stingray's. At least I think that is what I mean. If that is not it I will look really stupid.

VE said...

bonnie - That's a picture of the USS enterprise from Star Trek. Boy are you offtrack! (just kidding)

Bonnie the Boss said...

I blame it on the mad cow disease.

VE said...

bonnie - Mad cow should be blamed for everything. I'm blaming global warming on it already!
