I'm moving. That's right; if there's one thing people dread the most its moving (well, besides death, taxes, spam, and vacation sales presentations).
But I did get married in July and you know how we are in this seeming race to accumulate as much crap as possible until one day we wake up and move and say "that's a lot of crap to move". But getting married again in mid life means that we just merged a whole lot of crap.
No more! It's too hard on my back. It's too much time spent moving another knick knack to some place it'll sit until I move again. It's time to simplify. Get down to just absolute bare necessities of what I need.
And you know what? It makes moving a lot more easy... (ps...the wife was more minimalistic than I could get to...opting for the floor. I wish I had the will power!)
If posting next week seems a little less than stellar it's only because I'll be moving my chair trying out the optimum locations in the house.

My advice is to sell everything on craigslist, move into your new place, then buy what you need on craigslist again.
That's a lot of space for dancing! How does your voice sound like in all that minimalism?
Put it in the fireplace, the room looks cluttered.
Think of the possibilities of having no furniture. With that hardwood floor you could open a roller derby or perhaps a ballroom dance studio in your living room!
Moving sucks ass. I'm all for simplifying! Good luck with your move! Oh, and don't strain your back lifting that chair!
ugh moving is a serious pain in the butt. trying moving overseas sometime. that's even worse. though it is great for motivating you to purge yourself of possessions.
Is that piece of paper one of those "someone will walk over and pick this up and then fall through the trap door" kind of things?
kurt - That's good advice! (stole that from A League of their own when Tom Hanks writes "Avoid the Clap" on a baseball and gives it to these kids...)
anette - I can finally hear my voice! Yeah, I feel like I finally have a voice!
dale - I hate that clutter feel. There's a storage area under the stairs; I'm gonna move in there and call myself Harry Potter...
sarah - Doh...I did have inline skates!
evil - No, don't worry. I made the wife move it just in case...
lime - I can't imagine...how would I get all the crap through airline security?????
megan - Ha! That's no paper...that's a floor plug.
Good luck with the move. I'll have to get pointers on the most effective way to move furniture. I mean the chair. :)
replace that floor with a trampoline and I am coming on over.
I hate moving. I haven't done it in many years, but I think I'm going to have to do it in the near future.
That house looks nice!:)
I hope your hiring movers to move that chair... it looks heavy.
Yep, I hear you. Not looking forward to my next move.
you moving out of there or in?
Moving, that's such an odd word for becoming stationary in a different place.
During the past month I downsized a lot. Its really liberating. I sold or gave away (to Goodwill) at least 6 garbage bags full of crap. Most of the knick knacks are really only dust collectors and since I hate to dust there was only one thing to do...get rid of it! Good luck with your move.
angie - The most effective way is to have your friends/neighbors (your free movers) do it for you.
kelley - I was going to but the trampoline floor was an upgrade and the loan bounced...
sj - Just nail your shoes to the floor...that'll prevent it
alex - Of course...movers (neighbors/friends) should always be used
carla - Now why would you want to move from that locale?
dee - Moving in
carlae - And after it's done I don't intend to move again!
arizona - I hear ya. I like to visit my old home over at Goodwill...
My plan is to leave all my crap for the kids to deal with after I'm dead.
btw, love the floor. ;)
Oh yeah. I purged so much crap lately I want to do more.
I never want to move ever again.
Good luck with the chair positioning; remember the principles of Feng Shui for optimum effect.
Just tonite Peter started looking at some houses around the area that are for sale, and my first thought was "NOOO...I don't want to move all this crap!!" We got 3,000 SQ of accumulated crap.
But good luck!
My father (a notorious pack rat) gave me this piece of advice before my last move:
"Get your papers. Everybody's got papers. The real papers, not the junk papers. Put them in a box. It should be a small box. A lock is good. Then get your photo albums. You need your photo albums. Maybe three changes of clothes. Throw everything else away."
Jeez! Why so much clutter??
I love to move INTO a new place... finding where everything should live, putting stuff away, ahhh.
I just wish you didn't have to move OUT of the new place to do that.
Go shopping and buy all new stuff!!!!
meg - That's a good idea. Then they can fight amongst each other on what to do with all that crap.
Feng Shui? Is that a noodle dish or a samauri?
jacki - The hard part is I have 3200sf to position my chair. It's a tall order!
padraig - Ha! That's good advice! Three changes of clothes seems excessive...two should work...you can still wash one if necessary
bee - It's the chair...I just can't seem to part with it
manager mom - So does the wife!
sunshine - Now that's the American way!!!
I think it's a mid life thing VE...I am with a number of these commenters in that I have been "purging crap" lately.
I love my 20 year old daughter , but do I need to keep EVERY popsicle stick frame she EVER made? I asked her how she felt about it..she said Mom, throw that crap out!
Plus I really love going from the big size rubbermaid container down to the smaller one. I really feel liberated.
HUGS!!
good luck.
i hate trying to find anything after a move....it seemed such an obvious place when it was packed, now where is it?
Unfortunately for you, you can only have the power in your mind. There it must fester, until one day...well, nevermind. I was getting ready to write about you going crazy, but then I realized it's already happened ;-)
leelee - Yeah, I organized all the kids school stuff into folders and put into storage by years. It's all neat, concise and tidy now.
anne - Isn't that the truth? And then even though it makes logical sense in the new house...you're brain is still thinking where it was in the old one.
colby - Yes, sadly, if you were going to write about that you'd have to have known me when I was say....one!
The new place is so gorgeous!! You might want to change the clolor of the chair canvas to match the room.
