Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg
No…I didn’t just have an orgasm while I was typing that and went amuck with the keyboard. It’s an actual place in Massachusetts. Here, I’ll prove it:With 45 letters in the long version it is the longest place name in the USA and the sixth longest in the world. Two things come to mind there:
1. The Native Americans were fucking with us when we asked what it was called
2. What on Earth are these other five that are longer? Is there a land of the stutterers?
Can you imagine that coming up on Wheel of Fortune?

Contestant: Woa Pat, looks like you’re looking for an extra half hour for the game!
Pat: Let’s play. You landed on the Million dollar spot.
Contestant: I’ll take ‘G’ for a million. I mean come on, it is the 'G' spot...ha ha ha. Can I say that on TV?
Pat: Very good. There are 15 of them.
Contestant: I’ll be rich! Ha ha ha. I can retire. I’d like to buy a vowel…an ‘A’ please
Pat: There are 9 of them.
The game goes on when…
Contestant: I’d like to solve the puzzle. Is it Lake Chargagooglegagagoobergomerpylegargoyle?
Pat: No, I’m sorry that’s incorrect. Next contestant.
Contestant: That’d ridiculous, NOBODY can pronounce that lake correctly!
Contestant Two: Is it Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg?
Pat: That’s correct! You win the game and $500.
Contestant: How did you know that?
Contestant Two: Native American Studies is my major in college.
Contestant: Wow, good luck with that. You’re gonna need that $500…

Ooooh, so THAT'S why I can't find a job. Damn, I wasted, no wait - my Dad wasted $100k on my education! What should I do now? Join the Peace Corps?
incredible woody - Why stop now? Waste another 100K and get double your education. In fact if you do it 5 or 6 times you can then just retire.
pat: our next category will be obscure illness names.
solution....
microscopicsillicovolcanoconiosis
lime - I thought that stood for quartz dust...what illness is it? One that makes you have difficulty in spelling long ridiculous words?
Hey, you can take that degree to the University of Colorado, pretend to be a native American and get a tenured teaching position.
It's been done before.
I love that wheel fortune board! That is so funny!
I can't stop laughing.
Yeah that would be kind of daunting to look up and see that board.
Oh, Vanna, turn me a letter!
You just outed my favorite fishing place, you bastard!
Too funny!
Here is some towns that aren't long but they are strange...
~Panguitch (concequenly, great fishing on the lake near here)
~Parowan
~Paragonah
Mr. Indian Studies, these should be right up your alley.
iamnot - Really....HOW? ;)
quirkyloon - Finally Vanna would have to do a little work up there
padraig - Sorry, man. Do you get really long fish there too?
bonnie - Paragonah? Is that like paranoia of your hurting ones gonahs?
I like the authentic rendering of the Nipmuc on the sign - lol
I'm sorry, but since when did signs include who provided the sign??
"Exit 15 - Smith Street - sign provided by the taxpayers and Federal Highway Funds and the Hockaloogie Sign Company"
roy - Yeah, once again our mucking in their affairs with our interpretation. Doh!
megan - Haha...the department of transportation can't afford signs anymore...they're using the adopt a highway principal to suppliment by allowing advertising
Hey, we all know Vanna isn't there to "work". They have to have somebody to distract from the annoying Pat and the silly contestants.
I think the name of the lake is actually pronounced "VE" or at least "SMITH" as is anything that can't be easily pronounced.
stupid contestant #2, should have spun for the H, coulda made more than $500.
The Welsh too like to fuck with people's heads and tongues ie there is a place called:
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in Wales. The town name means "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave"
Right
anne - Well if they were that smart, they wouldn't have majored in Native American Studies!
emmak - Ha ha. I'd hate to ask directions for that place too. Also, it almost looks like Robin Williams is buried in that name!
All that and Cleveland ended up with the Indians?
reforminggeek - Yes, Vanna is there to distract people from looking at Pat's hair (or lack thereof)too closely.
prefers her fantasy life - Perhaps they SHOULD have left Cleveland to the Indians!
haha I would have thought that name was fake it not for the sign!
HAHAHAHAHAH!
Thanks for the laugh.
:-)
No f*king way - that's a real place? OMG, can you imagine filling out an application for a credit card or ordering something from a catelogue and having to put that as your address? There wouldn't even be enough boxes for letters! Oh, and those poor kids who had to spell it in school for their address...probably couldn't write it until 6th grade. Sheesh.
I guess it's official now -- I am illiterate and speech impeded and will never get on Wheel of Fortune. I guess this means Jeopardy won't take me, either.:)
sarah - Yeah, so did I initially. I don't know where I find this stuff...I've never even been to MA!
chriseldin - That's what I'm here for...
giggle pixie - Yeah, it's real. I'd just call it Lake C and let them figure it out by zip code...
serena - It's ok Serena, we'll get you on Dancing with the Stars. You get to dance with Meatloaf!
I guess I can live with that, as long as his dancing doesn't embarrass me.:)
serena - Well...that would be debatable I suppose...
I've seen that sign in Webster, but I've never had a camera with me.
And that name sure is a mouthful, isn't it?
HA. The WOF scenario was brilliant!! Cheers!!
My mother grew up right near there and claimed the name means "you fish on your side of the lake, I fish on my side of the lake, and nobody fishes in the middle."
You should try reading Danish! Some of those words look just like that sign. But the trick is that they are not pronounced anywhere near how they are spelled.
okay I just spent too much time trying to pronounce and read that name. :) now if I can only uncross my eyes!
hale - That name isn't just a mouthful, it's an entire meal!
matt-man - Thank you, sir!
yellojkt - That sounds reasonable...wait...what if it's a round lake? What constitutes a 'side'?
jacki - I just don't understand it. The Danes have long hard to pronounce words and yet they're the happiest people on the planet. It makes no sense!
dee - I have up at the 'C'! But I'm gifted with under achievement...
it's the disease that comes from inhaling silica dust. the silica dust version of black lung basically.
lime - See, I can learn something new. What did you say?
I'd like to buy an O, Pat.
How would you say that backwards?
real live lesbian - Ha ha. Yes...several...
arizona - I wouldn't! ;)
