The Next Beatles

I was having some sort of dinner when an Oasis song came up on the Music channel and I remarked at how the song reminded me of The Beatles. Of course that sparked a discussion around the endless bands that have had the coveted dooming title of the “next Beatles.”

Remember them all? I can’t even imagine how many there are. One of the first ones I remember was The Bay City Rollers. S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night! Puleez! L-A-M-E-A-S-S Band!

The motley crew that followed never held up either. From The Knack to The Squeeze, from Duran Duran to Oasis. Inevitably there will always be a four man band hopelessly placed into that death role and set up for failure too.

So anyway, I’m eating whatever it is I can’t remember having and my son says:

Son: What if another band just plays their songs and gets famous?

VE: Then they’d just a Beatles cover band

Son: But what if they change the notes of the songs and change the words?

VE: You mean like they play ‘Nine Days a Week’?

Son: Yeah…and they get famous

VE: Oh yeah…like ‘Good Day, Sun Screen…’ or ‘Let it C’ which happens to be an upgrade from ‘Let it Be’ you realize

VE: Oooh, oooh, and how about “Somewhere Man, please worry…” or “Paper Stack Fighter” or “Love Me Doo doo” or “Maxwell’s Arm & Hammer” or “Norwegian Woody” or “Hey Jube” or “Do you Want to Apply Some Secret” or “Fool on the Pill” or…

Son: Oh, Dad!

(eyes roll, family leaves, VE left alone….again….)

VE: Man….it’s been a hard day’s night to please this crowd!

maureen - Ha! Very Good. Hey...and you're actually first!

Bay City Rollers - lolz

Hey, I'm not looking for the next Beatles, I'd just be happy with a band that could put half a dozen good songs on an album.

I guess there can only be one Beatles. I can remember when they came over here the first time and they were on the Ed Sullivan show. The next day at school if someone even mentioned their name than some girls would start screaming, swooning and acting like she was gonna faint. It was so funny. I think we all had crushes on them. Different ones at different times. I do own a picture of George Harrison at a Hare Krisna place from in the lates 1970's, these are very rare. He would not allow these pictures to be taken. I'm not sure why I keep them and do not seel them. I guess cause they are mine.

But there was and will be only one group of the Beatles.

God bless.

roy - I think those days are gone. We're almost to the point that the CD format doesn't even matter. A shame. There are still a few albums/CDs I have to listen to in the right order or I don't care for them. Dark Side of the Moon is one, Moody Blues Days of Future Passed is another.

mrsupole - It was all the screaming that made them not tour anymore. Gee, thanks! ;)

forget being the next beatles - how about a band that can actually sing more than 1 decent song? or one that uses lots of cow bells?

Dee said...

i'm with Jaime, thank goodness for Itunes so I don't have to spend a bunch of movie for a album that I only like one song on it

To this day I still don't know what Norwegian wood is. A Norwegian woody I am of course very familiar with.

I remember seeing a mop-haired band of muppets on Sesame Street playing, "Letter B." It was a very good rendition.

I never like the Beatles.

But I did like Tommy James and the Shondells! And, of course, Harry Nilsson.

Fun post today. Thanks for the laughs. I'm too tired to make my own. :)

Ha, "Paper Stack Fighter" sounds a lot like my job sometimes! Another question is, who's going to be the new Elvis??

Quirkyloon said...

I'm not even gonna try. heh heh

Very funny post VE.

VE are you the lost "fifth" Beatle?

Just askin'

*smile*

The beetles. One of those bands that are just inexplicably popular.

Like Oasis.

Ugh.

teeni said...

Am I the only person brave enough to admit they never liked the Beatles? I think they were seriously over-hyped and these days it was always hard to get through an hour of music on the radio without having them played at least once. Sheesh.

Nah, all you just needed was a little "Assistance from Your Fiends."

Hm. A four-member boy-band. Yeah THAT'S original....

Now we're moving toward the three-member thing with the no-talent Jonas brothers...

Duran Duran was compared to the The Beatles?

Norwegian Woody - my new theme song!

How could we forget the "Prefab Four"?

Or does no one want to monkee around with that one?

My sister didn't like the Beatles either. I don't like her very much.

VE said...

jaime - That's just not possible in today's ADD society...

dee - Thanks goodness for Napster! I didn't have to pay for anything...

emmak - If John's singing about good Norwegan wood, is that imply he had a bi-sexual or gay period?

gladys - There you go! You can be famous too...

teri - Did you wear crimson and clover?

elizabeth - Who said he's dead? I saw him surfing not long ago...

quirkyloon - I think I'm going to have to be like the eighth beatle because there were three separate people identified as the fifth beatle already...

mike - Yeah, so what if they pioneered music videos and stadium concerts. Showboats!

teeni - It is your God-given right to be wrong about the Beatles!

jenn - Ha! Another good one. I always thought the bigger song was Penny Lane Bryant and then they just cut it down a bunch...

mj - Looks of no-talents getting airwaves these days. That's what you have with 200 channels of crap to fill...

kurt - I blame it on the 80s in general...

incredible woody - It fits you! ;)

humorsmith - Are you really sure she's your sister then? That's not right...

I like Hard Jubes. They're meatier than the soft kind

The next Beatles??
I try to take that sort of thing with a grain of salt.

And pepper.

Kinda like Sergeant Salt-and-Pepper's Slightly-Embittered Hearts Club Band.

Bunk Strutts said...

Of course, all those songs and more are included on the NeoBeatless' debut album "Beat the Meatles" available on Crapitall Records.

Long Live the Rutles!

VE said...

nursemyra - Ha! I'll take your word on it...

janna - Excellent! I'd buy that...

bunk - Yes, long live the Rutles!

Kevin John said...

Funny you should bring this up..
My son and his buds play and have fun w/the beatles tunes and perhaps i'm bias but they don't sound half bad. They sound pretty damn good.
Maybe you might hear from them someday, wouldn't that be a hoot?

Hahahahahahaha, Oasis... a band... thats funny...

kevin - Excellent, I certainly wouldn't have any problem living off family royalties...

alex - Then there was Men with Down Underwear...or what was that 80s band from Australia?

fundamentaljelly - Ha! Excellent. The next line could be "You only bring me your poxie certificate"...

prefers - Ha! Good one. I never did understand what was so appealing about doing it in the road in the first place. Asphalt isn't very soft you know...

My 13 year is a bundle of questions. I wish I could talk her away like you can your son.

VE said...

It's actually quite easy. They hate it when you agree with them and then become more nonsensical than they are!

President Barack Ob-la-da
anyone?
Its funny about The Beatles........They are not really "worshipped" in an Elvis-Like Way,yet the music they made still has a kinda oblique presence in our everyday life.........

VE said...

bondeblogger - Excellent. My son can now roll his eyes at you too!

tony - Good one! Yes, you can like 'em or not but you can't deny they haven't influenced an awful lot.

subtorp77 said...

Bay City Rollers( excuse me **snicker** ). What would those guys expect? They threw darts at a map to get their band name. Or so I've heard.

And sounds like you had an interview with "Whimsical Will" there, for a minute. He did a Beatles collage song back in the early '90's( I think it's on one of my old Dr. Demento tapes ). But I don't recall "Paper Stack Fighter"~~hilarious! :)

VE said...

subtorp77 - Dang, I knew Dr. Demento pretty well but I don't remember "Whimsical Will" at all. One has to think that most humor has been redone before...

Starrlight said...

I am lowbrow and will 'fess up to laughing way too much at Norwegian Woody ;)

Oasis are damn near a Beatles cover band. Don't get me wrong, I love the Gallagher boys but they are workin that angle hard.

Dalton J. Fox said...

I used to be all about some Oasis back in the mid-90s. But as much as I liked them, I never really looked at them as the "next Beatles".

In fact, no band will ever be the "next Beatles" in my opinion.

Serena said...

So, they'd be playing, like, "Cantaloupe Fields Forever?" Nah, it'll never play in Peoria.

Nessa said...

I was never much of a Beatles fan (will I be struck by lightening now?)

Your songs would be more entertaining.

VE said...

starrlight - Nothing wrong with that angle as long as they're clear about who they are

reforminggeek - Was that the Hogwarts Beatles?

dalton - Yeah, it's just a silly title used by the Media!

serena - Well...the Beatles were quite big in Peoria!

nessa - Don't say that too loud. People might hear you...

Brian Miller said...

Think I am with Roy, lamenting the fact that most bands settle for 1 or 2 good songs per album. If only any band could be 1/4 as good? : )

VE said...

Brian - Yes, not many can do that these days. I'm a fan of Radiohead and their last album has more than 2 I thought were excellent. But it's an exception.

Megan said...

Roy Scribner is one of my favorite commenters. But I do have a little crush on the mooooogster as well...

You should put them in your band. I'd totally be a groupie.

The VE-tles.

VE said...

megan - The VE-tles! Too funny. Can I include Jeff? He's actually got musical ability. Although Roy and moooooog might too, I'm not sure.

just so long as no one ever covers "michelle" again. i can't even describe how much i hate that song.

Anne said...

hey. i like s.a.t.u.r.d.a.y. night!

VE said...

lime - Ha! You're so going to get it now. Just wait...

anne - I like that evening, just don't ever play that song!

leelee said...

I can see you've pondered this before..

HUGS!

VE said...

leelee - No, it's just how sickly improvisational I am...

Uncivil said...

I like your
"paper stack fighter".....a good one to play at the office!

uncivil - Of course that fighter will lose...
