Rapper Kayne West is a Genius

Ok, he’s really not…but I am. I’m going to give you a peek into how my creative mind works and comes up with an idea.

It all started with my in-depth peruse of the Yahoo news blurbs. That’s right, 15 words per subject is plenty of detail to keep up with current events. Anymore and I’d just feel too saturated with knowledge.

So anyway, there’s this looking at me on the screen the other day:

Rapper Kanye West's new 52-page book offers collection of his random 'thoughts and theories.'

Here’s what I immediately thought:

What the hell, 52 pages for a book? I’ve read chapters bigger than that. I’ve read paragraphs bigger than that. I think I’ve read sentences bigger than that. If fact, there are probably a couple of words or chemical names that are bigger than that.

Leave it to a rapper to only be able to come up with 52 pages of thoughts and theories. I’m pretty sure I can read that one in the bathroom completely even if I’ve got the runs.

But then I thought….hmmm….52 pages. That’s the same size as a deck of cards. I should do a book on a deck of cards! A book on a deck of cards!!!! Awesome!!! It’s all in the presentation, folks. Remember that.

Of course I first thought I’d just write a book upon the tops of the playing cards but then quickly realized, duh, that the tops have to look identical to every other card. Otherwise you’d start to recognize them after awhile and then know the cards. Still, I have all the space on the playing card side other than the top left and bottom right corners. Hell, the cards can be slightly oversized too so I can get more content in.

I thought this was an excellent way to present my humor. First of all, it requires concise small bits of humor; just use the best. People these days get bored easily anyway. I could even put out subsequent versions should the product be popular. Also, it’s a good way to advertise the blog for free!

Here’s my mock up of the back of the card (you might have to click to see it well):

And here are two original humor mock ups of the playing card side with the humor (again, click on it to enjoy some original VE humor)

I’m definitely pursuing this to market…give me your honest opinion on the concept (oh, and it's my 3 year blog anniversary too today...damn, 745 posts!)

perfect for toilet reading in my opinion.

And I have done a run on sentence longer than 52 pages.

Kristin said...

I happened to catch him talking about this on MTV news while true life was supposed to be on. Anyway, he was going on about how "it's perfect for people who don't want to read and do so much work to get to the point of a book. It's great for people who don't feel like doin' all dat"

Sheer genius.

California Girl said...

Really funny. Love the critique on Kanya West's thoughts & theories. When you said "WTH..." I just about fell down.

The card decks are clever. You probably WOULD/WILL make money doing those. Why not? More interesting than a real deck.

Don't forget a new twist on Tarot.

Congrats on your blogversary!

I like the card game idea. I was especially touched by the king/pregnancy card.

Yes, I cried when I watched Juno.

Hmm. Is that something I should freely admit on the interwebz? Could it come back to haunt me?

And I, too, feel left out of the "billion dollar" industry.

745 posts! Dang! That's a lot of VE!!!

heh heh

Thanks for keeping us laughing, chuckling, or even snorting!

Happy Birthday to your blog.

Happy bloggo-birthday, VE.

And the card idea should work. It will work. You could do different editions; politics, celebs, science, etc.

But you need a product name.

"VE's Deck of Knowledge"( nah, sounds too Trivial Pursutish )

"Shuffle This"? I'm just thinkin' here....

Gladys said...

I think it is genius and I am thinking you could actually incorporate this into a table game in Vegas. Instead of Keno or Blackjack you could play VE.

PS...happy anniversary. Do you get a coin or a chit or something for it like in other 12 step programs?

Beth said...

Happy Anniversary, you creative genius!
And I’d buy that deck of cards – 52 opportunities for a good laugh is priceless!
(Maybe not priceless – charge a reasonable sum.)

unfinishedrambler said...

Jumping off Kelley's comment, did she think yours or Kanye's was perfect for toilet reading? Myself, I don't know if I'd want to read a deck of cards on the toilet, but maybe that's just me.

745 posts? "Damn" is right. Wow. Congratulations to one of the best in the humor blogging business. Keep on rocking in the free world, my friend.

Jaime said...

happy blogiversary. you need a catch name for this deck of cards. but it sounds like a hit.

Megan said...

Three years is a lot of VE. Not that there's anything wrong with that! Keep it up, man.

I'd buy those cards in a second.

Janna said...

Happy Blogiversary!

My own three-year mark is coming up in August.

Hard to believe it's been that long.

Nessa said...

Happy Anniversary!

This idea is great. I see kids buying them for Father's Day (hurry up) or adult stocking stuffers for Christmas (you surely can make that deadline.)

Elizabeth said...

Happy Anniversary!! Wow, three years! Congratulations! For some reason I see these cards being a hit at airports. You know, you're waiting around for your flight, play solitare and reading the cards to kill the time. I don't know why, but that's the first thing that popped into my head!
:)

Happy Blogday.

I may not have as many ideas as you so I'd have to market a Pinochle deck.

Mrs. R said...

Happy Blogiversary. I think I'm more shocked that Kanye West can actually manage to fill 52 pages with thoughts and theories...

ReformingGeek said...

Congrats on three years! WOW!

As for the cards, it's a great idea and to expand on Elizabeth's point, online solitare would also be a good place for the humor.

yellojkt said...

The Blogography guy tried to have card decks made for his online store and it was a huge hassle, iirc. Give him a shout on how easy or hard a get-rich-quick scheme this is.

And Happy Blogday. I probably passed 4 years somewhere recently, but I don't post daily so I have much less to show for it.

Hit 40 said...

I am actually surprised that he has 52 pages of thougths???

I do not want to know what they are? Or probably what the ghost writer wrote for him!!!

Hit 40 said...

Darn - I have the attention span of a cat!!! I missed that last line. WOW 3 YEARS!!! Congratulations!!

Ronda Laveen said...

Honestly? About the card venture? Well...sheer genius. Even more than Kanye. I think they will sell.

Happy 3rd Bday. Here. I got you a truck.

VE said...

kelly - Why does that not surprise me that you have run on for 52 pages. And don't be giving me that death look, either...

kristin - Yeah, all those darn words and pages in books, what a nuisance! Next he'll be on to the cooking industry eliminating ingredients...

california girl - Good idea, the new twist on Tarot. I'll make a smaller deck of those...24 tarot gold...

quirky - Would it help if I told you I cried in the new Star Trek with Kirk's father dies. Well, I could have cried. No really, it might have happened....

Bazza - Thank you, sir!

subtorp77 - A catchy name is important. Thanks for thinking out loud too. I'm still pondering this...

gladys - Yeah, three years and I get nothing! Well, actually I get all your great comments. And for those I thank you all!

beth - Thanks. I'll have to put up a poll and see what a fair price is. I'm looking into sources this week

unfinishedrambler - If I bound it in a way that you could flip through it like a book but could also still pull it into a deck of cards to play with, would that help?

jaime - I know, I know. I was out over the weekend and thought about that too. I'll give it some thought this week.

megan - Thanks. Yes, three years of VE is like 10 normal years of aging. But I'll keep putting it out there for you!

janna - So listen to your elders! As I'm a couple of months older in blog age that means...well, I have no idea what that means. In my case it probably means that you CAN make a horse drink, you just can't make him stop...

nessa - I wish I'd figured it out for Father's Day. Let's shoot for Xmas! Well, don't really shoot anything...

elizabeth - Nice call! I was recommended that very same advice by somebody in publishing. Perhaps it was just a subtle way of telling me to get out of town...

my daily list - Good luck though, those people are fanatics!

mrs r - Thanks. Perhaps he used really big fonts and lots of margins and line space...

reforminggeek - Hmmm...I'll have to look into that. Not sure how anyone could make money at that but the exposure might be good.

yellojkt - Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely look into this. Did he have the same concept or just try and use his logo stuff on a deck of cards? Wow, over 4 years. You've been going a long time!

hit40 - Thanks. Yes, it hardly seems like 3 years in some respects, in others it seems like a long time. I still enjoy it though.

ronda - Thanks! I appreciate the opinion. I can't wait to play with my truck too!

Alex L said...

Three years... nice work.

I think as a joke the joker card should probably have no joke on it.

Ronda Laveen said...

I had to comeback to make sure my comment was appropriate. So, Kanye is a genius rapper, not a genius raper. I am so relived.

Perpetual Chocoholic said...

Happy Blogiversary!

I like the card idea. You need to proof read your King card. See...I really do read every word of your posts!

Jacki said...

You could also market these cards to conventions...you know...those tech thingees were companies give away a ton of freebies.

Happy Blogiversary!!

I like the cards idea. Then when I lose all kinds of money playing poker I can blame you.

Happy Anniversary buddy... wish I could buy you a beer!

freetheunicorns said...

That is quite a brilliant idea. Kind of wish I thought of it myself. You do a "Deep Thoughts" by VE kind of theme.

VE said...

alex - Now that's funny. Or another spin is that we put politicians and celebrities that are a joke on there...

ronda - Ha! I had to go see if I got it right too. Fortunately I cut and paste right from yahoo so I avoided that typo...

perpetual chocoholic - Let's see if I'm seeing what you are seeing. My tpos are the two capitalizations: "Take" and "Movie"...correct?

jacki - Give them away? Give them away? Why....that would be like blogging!

moooooog35 - Strip dice route, eh? Just don't roll snake eyes...

jeff - But see, you'll have something funny to read while you get deal after deal of worthless poker hands!

freetheunicorns - I'm feeling pretty good about the idea. Until I find out how unmarketable or un-cost effective it is of course. Ah, but the innocence of an unexploited idea...they're all perfect in the beginning...

Gladys said...

VE I do have a question about K West is he Steve Erkle grown up?

Roy Scribner said...

Maybe the book's 3-feet square with 10-point type? Naw, it's probably the size of a deck of cards.

VE said...

gladys - No, but perhaps he's Gary Coleman stretched...

roy - Good one.... ;)

gab said...

First off Happy Blog-a-versary!
When You first started talking about putting a book on a deck of cards a Johnny Cash song came to mind. Now for some reason(must be because it's Mr Gab's birthday today and I'm thinking more of him)I can't think of all the words. But I know it has something to do with the calendar. 52 weeks in a year or something like that. (Boy this makes me mad I can't think of the song!) Ok I may come back and try this again when I'm not thinking of Mr Gab and his birthday. (for once he isnt working)

Thinkinfyou said...

CONGRATULATIONS!! Three years is an incredible mark! I bow down to you for being able to make it three years and still being able to come up with amazing ideas!

VE said...

gab - Say happy birthday to Mr. Gab for me! The gnomes are sending him a million dollars. They printed it all themselves...

thinkinfyou - Thanks...it helps to be childish I guess...

gab said...

Ok Lyrics are by Tex Ritter; Here in part is the song....
You see, Sir, when I look at the Ace it reminds me that there is but one God. The deuce reminds me that the Bible is divided into two parts; the Old and New Testaments. And when I see the trey I think of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. When I see the four I think of the four evangelist who preached the Gospel. There was Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. And when I see the five it reminds me of the five wise virgins who trimmed their lamps. Ten of 'em; five who were wise and were saved; five were foolish and were shut out. And when I see the six it
reminds me that in six days God made this great heaven and earth. And when
I see the seven it reminds me that on the seventh day God rested from His
great work. When I see the eight I think of the eight righteous persons God saved when he destroyed this earth. There was Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their wives. And when I see the nine I think of the lepers our Savior cleansed , and nine of the ten didn't even thank Him. When I see the ten I think of the Ten Commandments God handed down to Moses on a tablet of stone. When I see the King it reminds me that there is but one King of Heaven, God Almighty. And when I see the queen I think of the Blessed Virgin Mary who is Queen of Heaven. And the jacks, or knaves, it's the devil. And when I count the number of spots on a deck of cards I find three hundred sixty-five the number of days in a year. Fifty-two cards, the number of weeks in a year. Four suits, the number of weeks in a month. Twelve picture cards, the number of months in a year. Thirteen tricks, the number of weeks in a quarter. So you see, Sir, my pack of cards serve me as a Bible, almanac, and prayer book."

Kurt said...

Kanye West's book sounds better.

VE said...

gab - Interesting...never saw that before. Thanks for sharing!

kurt - Ouch...thanks for the opinion.

Mike said...

I'd buy your book.

I'm just saying.

Serena said...

Aren't the gnomes likely to strike over this?

VE said...

mike - Thanks for the input!

serena - The gnomes...they're cranky about everything. I ignore them...

Carla said...

Woo hoo! Happy three year blogiversary. Somehow that word just doesn't look right.

Chris Wood said...

Well done on the anniversary. As to the riches, strewth ...

VE said...

carla - I think that about many words...and people...

chris - I had to look up that word! Don't be slipping in a bunch of Enlish words into my Enlish language there! Sheesh...

Maureen said...

Happy Belated Bloggiversary VE! I too have been at this for three years! (My first-ever post was April 26, 2006).

And regarding the book? Well, even at that length, it's 52 pages more of Kanye than I will ever want to read.

VE said...

maureen - Wow, you started just over a month earlier than me. How many blog posts do you have?

Perpetual Chocoholic said...

Nope. "I should rich in a month." Didn't notice the others.

Maureen said...

Well you are still way ahead of me (as you post daily and I am lucky if I find enough time to post twice a week). Total since 2006 on all four blogs I've had: 612 posts.

So yes, you are king of the Posties. Gee, that sounds like you work for UPS.

VE said...

perpetual - Amazing. I read over that at least five times. That's why it is always good to have another set of eyes looking at something. I'm terrible at proof reading here. I tend to throw it out there and then possibly change it. Possibly is the key word there.

maureen - 612 is nothing to not be proud of. That's 560 more than Kayne West! haha. But really, I'm not the king either. Matt-man over at Bagwine Ruminations has over a 1000 and he's been at it less time than I have. He writes 7 days a week! Yikes. I only do 5 days a week. I sort of feel now that perhaps every other day is sufficient but I have readers wondering what the hell happened when I miss a day (which I rarely ever do). Well...here's a toast to our toddler years! heehee

I am Arizona; a person, not a place. said...

Happy Blogiversary!

I like your deck of cards idea, especially the Juno edition!!

I'm actually amazed that KW was able to come up with 52 pages. That's impressive! That whole big gold, angry gangsta thing is so worn and boring. I'm waiting to see the next evolution of rap...

However, I do love watching Cops and seeing all the perps get caught because their pants won't stay up when they're trying to run away!!!

VE said...

arizona - Thanks. I just don't understand the whole pants down thing...

lime said...

happy blogiversary and i like this idea. kanye is an idiot of the lowest order. you, however, are brilliant.

lime - Thanks for the opinion and kind words. I'm working on this idea right now!

The Incredible Woody said...

The deck o' humor cards is brilliant! Happy Blogoversary!

VE said...

incredible woody - Thanks. Working on the cards now...

Anne said...

I won't pay over $4 for a deck of cards. Please keep that in mind when you talk to your marketing people.

thank you.

VE said...

anne - But it's a book of humor AND a deck of cards. I don't think I'll be able to get the price point down below $8, perhaps not even $10. We'll see...

subtorp77 said...

VE, that actually sounds spot on or close. I mean, a paperback book is going for around $8-15 anyway. And those pesky trading cards are round $2-5 a pack( depending on what it portrays ); and that's only for 8 or so cards....I'm just sayin', is all...

VE said...

subtorp77 - Yeah, that would be the target range I expected. Given that it is only 52 pages though, I'd like to hit just under $10 if I can get the costs down.

subtorp77 said...

I'd buy that for $10.00! You could even market it as an "ebook"; tho' I prefer to actually shuffle the deck. Or you could find a copier service or desperate small publisher( should be plenty of those around )...and wiat a minnit! Who says it has to be in "book" form?

Mrsupole said...

You would have to do something that the kids would want to buy. I have to say that I would probably not buy any, not because I do not like what you wrote, but because it is just more stuff that I would have to store. We have too much stuff and no where to put it anymore. So I am trying to get rid of stuff not buy more stuff.

But who knows I might have room for a deck of cards that you wrote and if you make them edible...I'm just saying......

God bless.

Mrsupole said...

Gosh darn it, I forgot to congrat you on your third anniversary with your blog.

I am gonna give a toast to you and just take a little sip of water...huh...I mean milk...no I meant grape juice.....or I mean purple wine. Yes, that is better.

God bless.

VE said...

subtorp77 - It's been an interesting exercise. Making them playing cards requires a special paper stock and a plastic coating for them. Also the special rounded corners. Most places that deal with these deal with regular playing card sizes only. If they do offer a larger custom card, they want minimum runs of a thousand. If they do smaller; they want a very high price. I might have to try and pitch this idea to a publisher to get it done economically. One that is already established in the big retail stores like Barnes and Noble. I've got a list of them that do humor type offerings.

mrsupole - You have a lot drink options there!

Dalton J. Fox said...

I hate Kanye West. No-talent bastard. I'd gladly buy your book on playing cards before I bought anything that he's selling. Did I mention I hate Kanye West?

VE said...

dalton - I'd be surely glad to sell you humor cards to get back at Kayne West!
