VE of the Caribbean - Lose your Virgin Islands

Just when we thought we couldn’t be more tired and hung over from our first port of call, there we were at St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands the very next morning at 7am sharp. What is with this early crap? It’s like working! Well, the getting up part is…

The plan of the day was snorkeling and beaches with some trinket shopping and food in the afternoon. Our first destinations were a bit of a disappointment as the water was mirky, there weren’t many fish, it was windy and the sea was rough.

Time for plan B! Let’s take the ferry over to St. John. If you don’t like one island, there’s always another (that’s got to be some kind of Caribbean mantra…)!

We were bound for Trunk’s Bay. It was renowned for being one of the five most beautiful beaches in the world. Who gets the job to decide that? I want that job. “No, I’m not quite sure…I’d better check out some more beaches before I complete my list…”

And was it beautiful. What we found out is that pretty much all the bays had beautiful beaches like that in St. John; this one just happened to be the most crowded because of “the list”. It wasn’t too bad though and the snorkeling was most excellent. One of the most pristine coral beds I’d snorkeled in.

We got back in time to pick up the required trinkets and get back on the ship.

Next up….VE of the Caribbean – St. Martin and how two countries share an island without killing each other

It's spelled St. Maartin.

Oh I am looking forward to the next post. Perhaps it will parallel how
the US and Mexico share a country without killing each other?

Errrr...wait....maybe the swine flu is just the beginning...

Man that water looks so nice. I'm going to take bath with my snorkel and mask and pretend I'm there.

Oh sure, everything looks pretty and pristine but I don't see a McDonald's. I'm not going anywhere that doesn't offer easy access to a Big Mac. Cheers!!

Fortunately, it was just the getting up part that was like work.

Sornie said...

I'd only call it a beautiful beach if it was a topless beach, so was it?

VE said...

jacki - Well, on the Dutch side it is...on the French it is Saint Martin. We went to both.

freetheunicorns - Excellent idea...be sure to have a fruity rum drink awaiting at shore...

matt-man - There was one in St. Thomas but St. John is a natures park type of Island for the most part.

kurt - Yes, otherwise it would have been hardly worth the effort. Travel shouldn't be like work!

sornie - Well...I was topless, does that count?

I would totally pop that island's cherry.

She probably wouldn't feel it, though.

Story of my life.

VE said...

moooooog35 - A sad story indeed! Maybe she just had no feelings...

I think I could get used to island life. Without even trying very hard.

Islands in the storm?
That is what you are?

Ha!

People are getting killed over St. Thomas? Was that in the news?

Oh man, it snowed here last night and I have to go scrape frost of the windows of my car. I want to just sit here and stare at that last photo instead.

Nice photos and yes, St. John is the place for snorkeling. Loved it!

I hope you did the America's Cup sailing over on St. Martin. We tried but there was no wind so they canceled it.

VE said...

incredible woody - I probably could too; if it were a large enough island. Some of these were a tad too small to keep me amused. I need hiking and rafting and such diversions as well as fruity rum drinks and sand.

quirky - If there's a storm on an Island...I'm probably there...

jaime - Did you go to Meghan's Bay? I heard that was the nice beach but we opted to head over to St. John instead.

nessa - Ha! My typo. I corrected it...

elizabeth - That is what you get for living so far North! I shouldn't be talking...I'm fairly far North myself...

VE said...

reforminggeek - No, no, no...no sailing for this VE. Far too many ropes, lingo and gadgets for me. I'll watch from the beach where I can get my fruity rum drink...

hey you could visit haiti and the dominican republic for that last bit about sharing an island too.

and yeah, there is always another island for sure.

VE said...

lime - Actually, I did visit The Dominican Republic back in 2007. I didn't go into Haiti though because it looked like there were a lot of kidnappings for money and many of them ended badly. Death was not in my itinerary travels...

Since it seems as though you were on the same cruise I was, I'm kind of hoping you'll mention encountering a nude beach (accidentally, of course). Talk about sight seeing!

leelee said...

Yay..this is almost like being there with you. except no food, boat or island destinations.

hmmmmm

HUGS!

Beds are for snorkeling? I've been doing it wrong all of these years! Nobody tells me anything. Sheesh.

Have you tried spray tans? The girls at the spa apply them with spray guns and vegetable-based solution. They can even "enhance" those 6-pack abs.

Gladys said...

VE did you see any eels? I frickin hate eels. They scare the shit out of me. That chums the water and then the sharks appear. Ooops TMI.

Perpetual Chocoholic said...

I'm sorry, but after looking at the daily picture on the side I'm exiting stage left before I spill my cookies. Blah!

VE said...

beth - Ahhhh...so you were at the nudist beach on the French side of St. Martin, eh? Any pics? ;) I ran a marathon years ago on the beach that started out in La Jolla, CA and there's a huge nudist beach there. I didn't know it at the time but figured it out when I realized that with my shorts and running shoes I was suddenly over dressed for the beach crowd...

leelee - Ok, but next time you're there with me you're gonna have to make the fruity rum drink run...

ronda - Spray on tans? Enhanced 6-pack abs? Why would I need these? I'm not single anymore! Oh, and it's a shame you haven't snorkeled in bed either...

VE said...

gladys - No eels at all. We saw this one fish that was long and skinny like an eel but it had a name I don't remember now. We knew that thanks to the underwater info signs that told us so.

perpetual chocoholic - Well the Star Trek movie is coming out so I thought it appropriate! ;) I know, I know...puppies and rainbows. Sheesh...

I have a friend whose daughter got married on St. John last week. From her pictures and yours, it all looks gorgeous. You couldn't pay me to snorkel, but it sounds like YOU had a good time.

Dalton J. Fox said...

7am? Yeah, I'm pretty sure getting up early wouldn't have been on my itinerary. Of course, I'm a lazy bastard when I'm on vacation.

yellojkt said...

So did you ever find the island virgin?

Megan said...

When, oh when will this TORTURE END?

I kid. But not entirely.

Janna said...

This is all beautiful and I wish I was there.

Be sure to wrap my trinkets in several layers of bubble wrap so they don't break when you send them.

VE said...

serena - What? No snorkeling? Most of the fish don't swallow you whole...most.

dalton - Here, here. Nothing wrong with a lazy vacation.

yellojkt - No! I think the previous ship got to her first...

megan - Don't worry, it's over. But I do have some humor observations/ideas I picked up while traveling so you'll have to put up with those too.

janna - I'm sending you a towel folding manual...

Wow said...

Do they put aqua blue food dye in the water to make it look like that?

VE said...

wow - Hmmmm...perhaps I should have the gnomes look into this. If they find large shipments of dye going to the caribbean islands...could be a big story...

Anne said...

ahhhh, to be snorkeling again in st. john..... Caneel Bay is a fabulous place to stay. (for a mere $700/night with meals)

Maureen said...

Totally jealous. I have never been farther south than LA....

VE said...

anne - Yikes, for that price it better be fantastic!

maureen - Caught in the LA traffic and couldn't go further south, eh?
