Top These Roofs!

Today is Theme Thursday again. This week the theme is ROOF. And while that could be construid as dog speak for "my stupid owner makes me wait 8 hours just to go outside to take a dump" it isn't the focus for VE this week.

No, we'll just go with that thing over your head. No, not the toupee or wig. No, not that dumb hairstyle you think is still "in". No, it's that thing they put on your house and then charge you your life savings to keep in repair or replace.

Now just getting to a roof is subject to interpretation. Take this first example. If you have wobbly obnoxious inlaws, by all means, send them on up this one!

Of course while amusing, I'm guessing that one doesn't pass the old building code requirements. But the next one uses both practical code-standard architecture and a little fun while we are at it. Look carefully at the stairs...not all is as it seems.

And for the outside visual, like everything else in life, who says you have to play by the rules? Who says a roof cannot be incorporated into a work of art? Take this roof as a point for inspiration.

Of course you can also go innovative in a different direction. This one is not only "green" it is, well, GREEN! Can you see your boss coming over and saying, "I've shifted you over into a more tactical branch of our operations. Go mow the roof!"

And the creativity doesn't have to stop there either. Take this interesting approach:

Or...you can go with the "Ruffles chips" approach...

And finally, why have a roof you have to maintain at all? Just use this approach.

Sure, it looks like a big sewer pipe (and let's not kid ourselves...it's a workplace so that is exactly what it represents anyway) but it's easy to maintain.
Yes...with the right frame of mind, one can find creativity and expression in anything...

Those are some amazing roofs. I was wondering if on the "Green" roof, they let people come out and picnic during lunch. And it took me a few minutes of staring at the stairs to figure out how they really are, see there are people out there who think like you do.

Truly some great roofs here.

God bless.

Oh, it's mow your roof...not blow. Never mind.

An interesting mix, as always. Enjoyed it.

if i had to mow my roof as well as my lawn it might get a little ugly. great pics VE, eclectic as always!

Beth said...

I'd kill or maim myself on those stairs...
And any roof that is low maintenance appeals to me - no matter what it looks like. (I'm recalling the cost of last year's roof repairs.)

I like both sets of floating steps.

Part of the roof of our parking garage here at the office is grass covered. Well, more like grass and weed covered.

Ruffles chips are my favorite...especially when slathered with dip.

How did you miss this?

I think I would enjoy coming to work more if it actually looked like a sewer pipe, too.

"The Ruffles chips approach" lol lol

Thank you for the pics and the comments on them!

That looks like a Sleestak, in the third pic there. What were they thinking at the design meeting?

VE said...

mrsupole - No, I don't think they allow lunch on the grass. That would encourage fun and limit the time you should be working...

ronda - Ha! I'm forever changing the paradigm...

silver fox - Remember, nothing is as it seems...and seamstresses make paractically nothing...

brian - I agree with you. But that's why here is in the states we have Mexico bordering us. They mow it! And they probably won't take over the country yet in my lifetime...

beth - You're eyeing the sewer pipe home design, aren't you? It gives one better justification to stuff their house full of crap too!

anne - I see a few of those too and yes, they are mostly weed covered. It's hard to get up on the roof and mow and fertilize and such...

jacki - Yes...Yum! The dip will be when it snows there...

VE said...

nessa - Ha! I have no idea why I missed that. Probably has something to do with the fact that I usually don't go searching for large penises on roofs! Now boobs...well, that's a different story...

roy - Of course! I mean look at me? I don't do shit...and I'm proud of it!

marianna - Ruffles have ridges!

subtorp77 - I know. I'd personally put those on the inside corner of the school classrooms... you know, to watch over those mischevious children...

Such great views of odd rooflines.....truly enjoyed the visit!!!

Great pics!

moooooog35 said...

My wife had the shingles last year.

That's about as close as I can get, sorry.

Wings said...

Quite the pics! The last one looks sort of like the Superfriends Hall of Justice! hahaha

VE said...

holly - Thanks. You found odd-central here...

candi - Thanks.

moooooog35 - I can relate; my wife threw shingles at me last year too!

wings - Ah, you've been to the superfriends hall too! I like hanging out with Wonder Woman...

Quirkyloon said...

These roofs make me grateful for my humble yet sturdy shingles.

AND...in my not so humble opinion NONE of them are HGTV worthy.

So there! Ha!

I was always fascinated with the Sod houses that Laura Ingalls talked about in Little House on the Prairie. I wonder if Melissa Gilbert has one in Beverly Hills.

angie said...

Just what I needed today......a reminder that with the right frame of mind........:)

I've missed stopping by while my life (I mean my house) has been pulled down to the studs. :)

Leah said...

Magical!

I'm totally haunted by the pic of the stairs seemingly hanging in midair.

Jeff said...

I've needed new shingles for 2 years now but can't afford to have my roof replaced. I never thought about just throwing some soil and grass seed up there. Thanks for the idea!

lime said...

that green roof is actually kinda groovy

VE said...

quirky - It's ok...I snuck over last night and replaced your roof with the ruffles one...

gladys - I'm guessing Melissa Gilber has to position herself as far from anything Little House on the Prarie as possible. She probably has a glass dome for a roof...

angie - That is what happens with house projects. You start with just wallpaper and the next thing you know; you're back down to the foundation so you can squeeze in "just one more thing" while you're at it...

leah - They are striking in their simplicity.

jeff - Can't you just keep snow up there 12 months of the year? ;)

lime - It's certainly green! Green is in.

ReformingGeek said...

Hum, that's a slinky roof, not a sewer pipe! I love the grass roof, though.

Kurt said...

I prefer a simple sod roof.

Elizabeth said...

I want a roof that snow won't stick to so I don't have to go up there and shovel it off!! I think that sewer pipe one would work!

willow said...

Leave it to you to find these crazy roofs! My fave would have to be the ruffles roof.

VE said...

reforminggeek - Even a slinky needs a roof...

kurt - Sounds dirty...

elizabeth - It would. Of course with a white sewer pipe house you wont' be able to tell what is snow and what is house...

willo - Plus you get to roll your tongue when you say it!

California Girl said...

I have greatly enjoyed the many posts with fantastical roof images. I find it especially interesting that none of your have repeated another's choice of photos. There are so many cool roofs in the world. And, yes, "roofs" is the correct plural. I looked it up.

Baino said...

Coolio roofing for sure .. mind I've got weeds growing on my roof, very pretty as the sun glints in the morning and catches the due on dandelions growing out of the gutters (I need to get the gutter guy back!)

VE said...

california girl - I was surprised there were no repeats anywhere either. Very interesting.

baino - Yeah...weeds in the gutters isn't good.

Tom said...

Knock me out! Cool cool cool...love the steps especially.

Serena said...

Artistic, yes. I don't think any of those would be very practical for the average Joe's house, though. It sure would get the neighbors talking, though.

VE said...

tom - The steps are quite elegant...

serena - But then again, I'm certainly not average Joe...

dreamhaven said...

Great roofs. I'm a fan of unusual architecture. Wouldn't want to risk those steps, lol

Perpetual Chocoholic said...

There may be snow on the roof but there's still fire in the furnace. None of those roofs have snow I've noticed.

gab said...

UGH today was not the day for me to read about roofs. Ours needs to be redone. Got the check from insurance, man from company who will do the work came out but check made out to us and our morgt. co. And they wont sign it! Why because we are 3 months behind and they are afraid we are gonna cash it and run off. After 34 yrs living here Im not in the mood to "run any where". I want to fix the house and sell it so I can go back to SD!

Uncivil said...

What ???....No trailer trash? I guess I'll settle for the sewer pipe abode?

I am Arizona; a person, not a place. said...

I love that grassy/green roof! The only thing that would make it better is a mini-golf course on it!

I am Arizona; a person, not a place. said...

PS: I voted for Count Chocula on the poll in your sidebar. Only one other person voted for him so far and I want to know who it is. That person is OK in my book!! We weren't allowed to eat junk food AT ALL when I was little, but after my parents divorced (when I was 13), the first thing my mom did was let us buy crap cereal for the morning. My choice was Count Chocula. Ahh, how fond the memories of my childhood are.....

thevinylvillage said...

Im all for environmental friendliness but Ill be damned if I mow my roof.

Megan said...

Nice roofs.

I don't know why roofs sounds so odd to me. I'm thinking roof should be like moose. Singular and plural.

But I'm pretty sleepy right now...

Bunk Strutts said...

@Arizona-- Did you catch the recent lawsuit against General Mills? A woman sued for false advertising because "Frankenberries" were not made of fruit.

The lawsuit was properly thrown out of court, as was the woman's previous suit, that "Fruit Loops" has no fruit in it either.

Janna said...

It's 3 in the morning and I swear I'm totally sober but duuuude, I just can't stop staring at the stairs.....

VE said...

dreamhaven - But as an appreciator of architecture; the steps have to be pretty amazing...

perpetual chocoholic - Well...it's not easy sludging around in the snow trying to take pictures of a roof. Just think of the sledding alone on that grass roof building!

gab - SD? Somewhere Denmark? San Diego? Selling Donuts?

uncivil - Trailers don't have roofs; they have tops...like a can!

arizona - So you remember the battles for popularity between Frankenberry and Count Chocula then! Noticed I only included the Count...he was my favorite.

vinyl village - Just hire it out to the less fortunate; like everyone esle does...

megan - Sounds like you need some sleeps...

bunk - Ha! Sounds like the only Fruit Loop was her!

janna - They are amazing...

Jaime said...

those are great pics. i like the first one with the floating stairs.

VE said...

jaime - That's my favorite too

escher would be proud--nice take on roofs...c

Maureen said...

You can always tell a Yank from a Canuck by the way they pronounce ROOF.

It's a dead giveaway.

Love the grass one; I'd love to see someone mowing it.

VE said...

jeez - Tony - We'll have to do basements next so you can look down again...

C.M.Jackson - Ah...you recognized that! Good for you...I wonder if anyone wood.

maureen - It was a dead giveaway as soon as you typed it with all caps. Obviously Canadian!!

Dee said...

i like the grass roof.....I could see myself rolling down and hopefully not falling off the edge

VE said...

dee - You must roll like me...starting off straight and ending up veering off some other direction without realizing it.

Carla said...

I looked at these when you first posted them. It's really only the last one I'm not too fond of.

VE said...

carla - Oh come on. Sewer Pipes are all the rage these days!
