No More Guiding Light

The Guiding Light is ending in September after a 72 year long run on radio and TV. You can see this coming:

Hiring Manager: What have you been working on for the last year or so?”

Actor: “The Guiding Light”

HM: “Ah, acting in a soap opera. Interesting. What did you do before that?”

Actor: “I was in the Guiding Light”

HM: “No, I mean before that what did you do?”

Actor: I didn’t”

HM: “You mean you haven’t worked up until your gig on Guiding Light?”

Actor: “No, I’ve been working my entire life.”

HM: “Ok then, what jobs have you had?”

Actor: “The Guiding Light”

HM: “I don’t’ think I’m being clear. Exactly when did you start working on the Guiding Light?”

Actor: “1957”

HM: “That’s preposterous; you were born in 1957.”

Actor: “Exactly, I started out as a baby on Guiding Light.”

HM: “You mean to say you’ve been on Guiding Light for your entire life and now it’s over?”

Actor: “Well, not my life”

HM: “No, I mean you have no Guiding Light to follow now”

Actor: “Err…I’d prefer to say that I’m pursing other opportunities.”

Yes…it’s going to be a tough road for life-long soap opera actors from that show…

VE: A closet watcher of The Guiding Light!

Ha!

You outed yourself buddy! hee hee

quirkyloon - Ha! Actually I've never seen it. I just thought it was funny that a show was running continuously for 72 years. I did watch The Young and the Restless for about a year back in the mid 80s. I'm sure if I tuned in now I could catch right back up...

I didn't know The Guiding Light started on radio. The things I learn reading your blog.

elizabeth - I wonder how many of the voice actors moved to TV and how many didn't (or they wouldn't let)

I followed a Guiding Light once, but then I found out that guy was lost, too.

VE said...

roy - Ha! Apparently the whole show followed the wrong light as well...

my mother in law is in mourning over this. i think all the soaps are basically interchangeable.

Imagine if you just started watching it, how pissed you'd be...

VE said...

lime - I agree...she can just switch over to one of the other ones and it'll all still make sense

megan - If you can't rely on a TV show that's been around for 72 years, what can you rely on?

I will admit my dirty little secret. I am a soap watcher. I blame my mother. But what's great is that I can miss several months (or even years) and still pick right back up where I left off!

VE said...

incredible woody - Oh no! Say it ain't so...haha...oh well, we all have our little vices...

k, i'm going on vacation and don't want to lose my place in your blogroll. I need you to post comments for me while I'm gone, okay;-)

VE said...

perpetual chocoholic - Not to worry; I'll be updating my blog roll this week but it won't go clear up to anything later than last week so you have some time after your back to catch up...

Oh gak... I can't stand daytime soaps. Even the small snippets I can't avoid when flipping channels bug me to no end. Daytime TV must be made to drive ne're-do-wells off the sofa and back to work or school.

Mom and I watched GL when I was in college and living at home. Yeah. It's crazy that it's been out there that long.

I've never been a soap watcher.
Why bother with constant reminders of people who get laid way more often than I do?
That's what going out in public is for.
*sob*

So when does the dvd box set come out, I want to get at least halfway through it before I'm eighty!

Ha. That was funny. Nuff said. Cheers VE!!

They'll have plenty of work appearing at Guiding Light conventions.

angie said...

72 years? They've been on the air that long? And viewers are just now deciding they aren't interested? Interesting. :)

VE said...

maureen - Ha! Good theory about driving people to work with them...

VE said...

reforminggeek - When you were in College? It really IS old. Haha

VE said...

janna - The public is getting laid on Guiding Light? Wow, it's a wonder that they cancelled it...

VE said...

finest mail - Thanks for stopping in.

VE said...

alex - Can you imagine the box set for that? Let's see a one hour program shown 5 days a week for 55 years of TV. That's 14,300 hours of footage with ads and about 10,000 hours without ads. Now even the highest DVD medium only holds 8 hours of data. That means 1,252 DVDs. Yes, that would be a BIG box set...

VE said...

matt-man - You said it all! Cheers

VE said...

kurt - Good point. It worked for the Star Trek and Star Wars folks

VE said...

angie - Maybe all their viewers died off of old age...

Now see whatever the script was for that actor in 1957 is the same one today, so really they have only acted one scene over and over and over again. So do they really have acting experience? Or more important is their name Truman?

VE said...

gladys - I guess it would be like the Truman show except that this time everyone just packs up and leaves Truman out into the real world without any warning or help...

freetheunicorns said...

How true that is.

Love the punchline.

Ronda Laveen said...

Some will probably transition from the eartly Guiding Light to the Eternal Guiding Light.

VE said...

freetheunicorns - Sad, but possible

ronda - Now there's a thought...

The Guiding Light has ended?? When did this happen? I never have watched it though...guess I'm not up on much news these days, got my head in the blogosphere... ;)

VE said...

winky twinky - Not quite yet. It ends in September. I wouldn't have known except for a blurb on the internet news from my home page. I don't get out much either...

Brian Miller said...

lol. there are many a housewife in grief counseling right now.

VE said...

brian - Yes, and the counselers are telling them, "just switch over to another soap; the plots are all the same"...

nursemyra said...

I've never heard of it. and now it's over :-(

VE said...

nursemyra - And you're the better for it...

Jaime said...

aww...the poor soap stars who have to deal with THAT interview. i almost feel sorry for them.

VE said...

jaime - They can barely function in the real world...

Step away from the light said the guide...move into the night.

72 years is a long time, my mom was just a child when this show started. I do not think I have watched it other than maybe while changing the channels.

When we lived in Panama we had only the military station to watch and it did not come on until 3pm and then went off air at midnight. At 6:30 pm General Hospital used to come on air and since that was around dinner time, everyone got hooked on that show. It was funny because the men were as hooked as the women were. When the guys would go out into the field for a few days, when they came back the first thing they would ask was what had happened on General Hospital. It was strange that when we got back to the USA to find out that the show was behind by about 8 months, so we missed that much of it, if you kept watching it. But then it was on in the afternoon and so we quit watching it.

I am so glad I never got into the habit of watching soap operas. It just seems too hard to keep up with who is sleeping with whom. Sleeping all day or going on the internet is so much better, or just playing computer games.

God bless.

mrsupole - TV in Pananma? I thought all they had there was a big canal...
