Just Where is this Beginning they Speak of?

Theme Thursday is upon us. This week it’s a tough one: BEGINNING

Ever notice that books and movies never seem to start at the beginning? No really, look at the original Star Wars. They ended up making three movies that preceded that beginning. They could have continued backward infinitely too. What were the Jedi like when they were fully strong? What was it like with the Siths in control before the Jedi? Who taught Yoda? Who taught Yoda’s teacher? There is no end to the prequels in the movies.

Who was Forest Gump’s daddy?

Who taught the Dread Pirate Roberts to sail?

Where did “the Dude” learn to bowl?

Was Homer Simpson ever moral as a kid?

What were Fred and Barney like in high school?

You probably have to go all the way back to the Bible itself. You know, Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.” Of course this brings up the same pattern. Where did God learn how to create? Who gave him the power? Where did he come from? Who gave him his Creation business license? The usual stuff…

Or you could just rely on the scientific beginning, “The Big Bang”. No, this isn’t that DVD you rented at the all-night adult store. I’m talking about the theory that all the nerdy kids came up with. You know, that the universe starting with this big explosion from a dense hot whatever. I know…your mind is back on that DVD again. And whether he/she was dense and hot doesn’t matter. My point, again, is that we can simply ask “Well what caused the universe to build up that kind of density and friction? Marriage? A job?” I’d buy that reasoning….

The reality is that there is no beginning. It’s simply an arbitrary chosen point in a timeline for which to start something. Sort of like school! And because of that…I’ve chosen to start my beginning in retirement. It saves a lot of the hassle of education and working and struggling, etc.

VE, retire? You?-LOL! Ooh, I hear Lucas banging on your door...he needs you prequel ideas :)

Alan Burnett said...

Nice journey back to no conclusion which, of course, is the right conclusion.

freetheunicorns said...

That's quite a theory VE. And by that I mean very nice post.

I wonder how this idea started floating around in your head? What were its beginnings?

Candie Bracci said...

There is no beginning as there is no end!;)

Beth said...

I’m returning that DVD. Today. (With some reluctance.)
I’ve been so misled – although it certainly made for an intriguing “beginning.”

Harnett-Hargrove said...

I'm with Alan, nice job on all the new questions.

Baino said...

Time is a human construct. (Did that sound reasonably intelligent - I think I was blonde in a past life!)

Anne said...

I doubt God didn't do well in school.

Big Bang Theory is a great show, Mondays at 9:30, baby!

Kurt said...

I've been retired for three years.

Roy Scribner said...

I'm beginning to think this makes my head hurt.

VE said...

subtorp77 - Now you know George Lucas is only going to get comedy from me...all though some of what he did with the last prequels was hillarous. That Jar-Jar... then again, some wasn't funny.

VE said...

alan - I like it when you can answer like that...and be right. If only my school tests had been like that.

VE said...

freetheunicorns - Ha! Nice. I'm afraid it only goes back as far as discovering the theme thursday topic and saying "Great. What in the hell am I going to do with THAT!"

VE said...

candie - There's no end either? Whew...glad I stopped working then.

VE said...

beth - So you're the one that had the video checked out. I should have known...

VE said...

harnett-hargrove - Thanks. I talked my way out of failing school too. Debate is a wonderful gift...

VE said...

baino - That sounds deep. If we are so intelligent, why are we the only ones worried about it. I don't see the cat getting up to make it's schedule...

VE said...

anne - I should have known there was a TV with that name. It fits the state of television...

VE said...

kurt - You are my hero...

Perpetual Chocoholic said...

You are how old?

You aren't retiring from the blog though, RIGHT!?

VE said...

roy - Best cure for that is to get out into the woods...before they cut them all down. Hey, I was up by Mt. St. Helens yesterday at a place called Lewis River Trail. It was old growth and one of the most majestic trails I've been on. That'll clear your head...

VE said...

perpetual chocoholic - Hey, I'm still in my 40s...that's long enough to slave at work. Now the blog...the gnomes see to it that I continue that. They have ways...

Roy Scribner said...

I'll be up in a couple of weeks. It's Oktoberfest, you know...

VE said...

Roy - Nobody has actually met VE in person. You should email me. ewelter1 at comcast dot net

Brian Miller said...

baino nailed it with time is a human construct...hard to put a pin down and say we are at the beginning...each day a new beginning moving forward until the end...great questions...actually i taught the dread pirate roberts to sail, but i passed it along to the next dread pirate roberts, but then again maybe it was the dread pirate roberts that taught me to sail...i am so confused...

VE said...

brian - All we are is dust in the wind! ;)

Dee said...

now why didn't I think of that?

Quirkyloon said...

I think if you find the beginning of the gnomes, you will have all your answers.

Yes, look to the gnomes.

VE said...

dee - Perhaps I purchased the last thought on it...

quirkyloon - That would answer so many things. Gnomes are mysterious creatures. See any mega movies or stories about them? Nope.

Colette Amelia said...

Wonderful!

Now see I'm digging this theory. I am going to start back at being a 3 year old. I can do anything I want and pretty much get away with it because it's cute. I can say what I want because well it's cute. I can run around naked, because once again it's cute. Hey I'm already 3 well all except the naked part and it being cute...

VE said...

colette - Thanks

elizabeth - Fruity Rum drinks will cure that...for ahwile.

gladys - That's a good plan; people even prepare your meals and you don't get nagging as a payback.

Jaime said...

just don't retire from blogging. then I wouldn't have your posts and comments to entertain me during the world's most boring deposition... and I love the princess bride references. keep em coming :)

Roy said...

42. Need I say more?

VE said...

jaime - Don't worry; I'm still having fun with the blog

roy - Nope...I understand!

e said...

What a fun blog this is, VE! I loved your comment about Fall on mine today, too. Thanks for popping by.

nonamedufus said...

Hence the movie Back to the Future, and back again (II) and again (III). I'm beginning to get this. Thanks, VE

Tom said...

how about a prequel to the Big Bang...when the former universe contracted into that lonely little atom for a bit? What, it could have happened that way!

Ronda Laveen said...

I taught the Dude to bowl. It was not easy.

Serena said...

Mary, Queen of Scots was quoted as saying, "In my end is my beginning." Perhaps she was simply a woman ahead of her times. Maybe she secretly wrote "Star Wars."

I can only guess who Forrest Gump's father was, but I'll bet you anything he and George Bush are first cousins, if not half-brothers.

Marianna said...

Retirement...hmmm...now that's a beginning I never thought about lol

xoxo

Wings said...

We all have our own beginnings, who knows when a new one will happen!

thinkinfyou said...

Ah retirement sounds wonderful, but isn't that like the beginning of the end?

ReformingGeek said...

I'm going to start living my life backwards now. Thanks for the idea!

Janna said...

The universe build up density and friction because it was on dial-up, and couldn't get anything better than a 33.6 connection, despite the fact that it pays for 56K, and it slowly got more and more frustrated when it tried to update its blog and view YouTube videos.

Ooops, no, wait... that's me.

Just in case I explode with a loud BANG soon, you may want to stand back.

VE said...

e - Thanks for dropping in. I'm just jealous your user name is shorter than even mine!

nonamedufus - The beginning never ends, does it?

tom - You're basically saying we're in never-ending-rerun mode, aren't you?

ronda- I'm impressed...I'll bet it was hard. The Dude does not abide...

serena - The Bush/Gump connection is a bit too real and scary...

marianna - Start early...avoid the rush!

wings - I know. As soon as the other ends.

thinkinfyou - Yes, but you can just defer that for a long, long time

reforminggeek - Just think how awesome you'll be at dodgeball now!

janna - As long as you're reborn with better connectivity...go for it!

My dad refused to turn 40. He said he was just going to be 39 for another year and then start going backward. He's "somewhere in the teens" now.

Dreamhaven said...

If I don't stop laughing, I'll split my stitches, lol. Great post

MikeWJ at Too Many Mornings said...

Hey, we both mentioned the Big Bang in a post on the same day. That's a weird coincidence. Or not. You decide.

Anne said...

you should really check out the show big bang theory, it's about two geeky socially inept physicists and their cute blond neighbor.

Maureen said...

Big Bang Theory is my FAVORITE show! I just die with the Star Wars / Trek, web, comic, sci-fi and video game humour... really hilarious. And having Bare Naked Ladies sing is just perfect. If you ever record it, be sure to freeze frame the final "information" part with all the writing. It's hilarious too... not the legal jargon you think it is.

Starrlight said...

LOL! But it would make a hell of a porn movie. Especially with the Star Wars Cast.

Uncivil said...

"Shit Happens"??? Sounds like a beginning???
So, in the beginning...shit started to happen? Who started the shit? Why did they start the shit?
This comment is beginning to get shitty?????
I lost my train of thought!

VE said...

megan - That's a good plan. I started at 22 and remain there to this day.

dreamhaven - If that happens...who gets the other half of them?

MikeWJ - Must be the beginning of something big!

anne - I could use the cute blond neighbor...

maureen - All these readers on her watching porn...for shame!!!!

starrlight - Brings a whole new direction to "may the force be with you"...

uncivil - You have a train that brings thoughts to you? Where'd you get the train? Who invented the train?

And here I am beginning again to work on the next set of comments. I was reading them, but just not commenting and so I have to begin again tonight. That will teach me to wait for the beginning of my brain to function or for my frickin shoulder pain to go away and just read without typing any comments.

See I fell lower on the list and I may now have to go all the way back to August or freaking January and see where was the stinking beginning. Is January the first the beginning or is December thirty first the beginning? Well they both have a first in them. Yup, now I am so confused, so here and now I am beginning to go backwards instead of forewards and just wanted you to know that last is first and when I am first it is still first and I totally hope none of this makes any sense to whomever is lucky or unlucky enough to read this. Sigh, back to the first of whatever.

God bless.

Geez, that was confusing even to me.

mrsupole - The list is ever changing and it's tough to stay on top...
