In Remembrance

It’s nostalgia and fact week here at Fantastical Nonsense. The year is closing out and the blog roll will once again flip over to zero just like a badly designed speedometer does when it hits 100,000 miles. Don’t worry, it will be preserved in the blog roll tab I have going. Plus, it gives all those new folks a chance to compete with you long time readers.

As most of you know, I create my blog roll manually by hand. That’s a lot of work but it also allows me to intimately know each and every blogger and how often they visit. Were I to automate this, I wouldn’t know who is really commenting these days and who I’ve missed for awhile. It wouldn’t be as personal.

As I rediscover the year this week, I’m going to first feature some humor (because, after all, this is a humor blog) and then give you some facts, focuses and remembrances over the past year or throughout my 900 blog posts (well, it will be 900 posts before the New Year hits). As I do so, I just want to say that I’m honored to have so many readers and so many friends here on my blog. Thanks to each one of you!

First the funny…

I’ve been feeling the need to do community service lately. You know, feel like I’m contributing to make things better. I don’t know what, but something. And then I discovered it in music.

That’s right. First it was this song:

Billy Idol – Eyes without a Face.

I know…its so sad thinking about those eyes just wandering around body-less. What to do? But you know, VE can be clever when the gnomes are slapping him conscious…

I found a very obscure 60s song that creates a complete win-win scenario:

It’s a Beautiful Day – The Girl with No Eyes.

Can you believe it? What a perfect match! And now thanks to technology we have a complete person…I feel so helpful...

Next…the Remembrance

There have been a lot of nostalgic posts going up on other Blogger’s blogs of those that we’ve lost over the course of the year. No, they weren’t killed in battle or fell soloing El Capitan in Yosemite. They, for whatever reason or another, chose to end their blogging existence and we that are left behind are the sadder for it. Having been around in blogger for over 3.5 years now, I have seen a lot of great blogs go away. One of my favorite posts was one with no material from me; I fortunately captured some material from one of my favorite humor blogs (and its been over 3 years now). You must check this out: Here. I've split this up into those gone from blogging and those who've disappeared but still have blogs out there.

Other People Exist - Kurt has been blogging a lot longer than I have and the person that got me started was following him so that's how I discovered his humor blog. Kurt suddenly folded up and removed his archive. The blog is still there technically, but all the great humor is gone now. He still has his zine and he still comments here regularly. I hope he continues; his was my favorite humor blog.

Travel Blogger – With 98 comments this year, I do miss her on the blog. She’s not completely dead in Blogdome as she does have a blog called the Stashtivist. Arizona has been on visiting and commenting on my blog for a couple of years now. I miss her charm here.

Caffeine and Cabernet – Giggle Pixie was here early on in the year and then just disappeared. Pewf! I don’t know what happened. That’s the way of the blog world though. Sorry to see her go.

Sane Without Drugs – Hit 40 commented here a lot over the summer time but then suddenly disappeared about a month or so ago. I’ve seen her blog referenced from other blogs too so I’m not sure what happened. Miss her though.

Momentary Cloudiness of a Dirty Mind – Another blogger that just disappeared along with her blog. I don’t know the story at all. Hope she’s doing well.

Lady Sarcasm - One of my Humorblogger peeps. As there are a lot of other humorbloggers on here, I'm sure they could share a better behind-the-scenes story on what happened. Still, I'll miss her wit.

These are the folks on my blog roll that are missing in action (they haven’t put anything up for months). We hope they’ll be found again back in blogland…

Discreet Charm of the Middle Class – Alex is from Australia and has been a frequent commenter here for several years too. He writes a lot of his own fiction and was always good for a witty comment and I appreciate that. He’s still out there as he did comment here once this month so there is hope.

Free the Unicorns – Chowner has (or had?) a great humor blog. Our style was similar and he even pulled off one of the “mystery guest” posts that I fooled you with over this last spring. I hope the break isn’t permanent.

Gab – Gab started right at the beginning of this year and was never missed a post for many months. Alas, she hasn’t updated since early Nov and before that not since Aug. Gab and I come from different worlds…I liked that.

Self Deprechaun – Another “not since early Nov” poster that hasn’t visited or commented here in the last half of the year. I miss his sense of humor here.

Bazza is Back Again – Bazza came on strong at the beginning of the year but disappeared for long stretches and then finally stopped posting to his own blog back in mid September. Bazza took photos of birds and lived in England. Miss you, Bazza.

Eternally Optimistic – Kevin John hasn’t posted since early October and I haven’t seen him comment here for a long time either. He had some great humor though and was always there with a witty comment. Hope you’re doing good, Kevin.

Memarie Lane – Marie hasn’t been blogging since the end of January and yet she’s still on my blogroll with 21 comments that she did that month…probably all of my posts up to that point. She had a great blog; I remember discovering it back in 2008 and I know she visits many of my same readers. Hope things are going well, Marie.

I’m Just Sayin’ – Winky Twinky hasn’t been over here for a long time and her blog hasn’t been posted on since early October. I’m guessing a case of life moving on here. Good luck and stop by once and awhile.

Practically Wisdom - Joe had a wonderful blog but then he broke some ribs and the break away (pun not intended) from blogging kept him away for good. The blog is still there with an explanation. I didn't put him in the RIP because sometimes bloggers come back...hoping you do Joe!

Because I could Never Keep up with a Diary - Sadly, it appears *just jen* couldn't keep up with her blog either. She hasn't updated since August. She used to visit early on in the year. I know she's connected with a lot of the Theme Thursday gang...perhaps they know what she's up to.

Count Sneaky's Electric Notebook - Count Sneaky had a fun blog. Though he only visited a few times, I enjoyed his humor. I hope he's ok; I'm not sure how old the Count was but his blog says he's been married for 53 years so that's getting up there in my book; hope you keep on going!

And that is as far as I'm going to go down the list. There are others on the roll but they didn't visit enough for me to really get to know them. Hoping they all are doing great in their lives and we miss their presense here in the blogdom

Quite nice here, VE. And Momentary Cloudiness is still round and still posting...

Everyone has his/her own reasons for starting a blog and stopping it but it does seem like you've come to the edge of the proverbial cliff, whence they do go awy, wot? Here's to another 900 posts( or more ), in the new year :)

subby said...

I've also started in on all those back-posts of yours I missed, when my PC crashed...see? That would be another reason for a "disappearing" act, yes?

Deb said...

Wait. "...intimately know each and every blogger..." Are you kidding me? I thought I was the only one you knew intimately? Damn you, VE. And you think "real" Portlanders live in Oregon? Pffft!

ReformingGeek said...

Yeah, this "touchy-feely" VE is creeping me out. ;-)

How dare life get in the way of blogging!

Megan said...

I miss OPE so much I can't even talk about it...

Ronda Laveen said...

Yep, Subby's right about Marianna of Momentary Cloudiness. I had seen her for months then a few weeks ago she did a Theme Thursday or two. Finally, this week she dropped a comment off. Just said she'd been busy and hoped to be around more.

Forgot to say, back in the day, I just loved It's a Beautiful Day. Haven't heard them for years.

Elizabeth said...

You have such a long blog roll I'm impressed how you get to know so many of their blogs!

VE said...

subby - Yes, one could definitely disappear into my archives...scary in there! ;) Glad to hear about marianna...I guess it was my PC that didn't let me get over to her blog...I've been having some problems that I cannot seem to track down where IE and Firefox just don't link to a web site for some reason. I'm due for a complete reload of the operating system I think.

deb - Shhh...I didn't mean THAT intimate...you know...most people I don't even know their name. Of course...we've got that Portland connection...

reforminggeek - Wait a minute...just because I touch doesn't mean I can feel...it's winter you know!

megan - I know, I know...

ronda - Sounds like that one was my mistake due to a connectivity problem I'm having. Glad to hear she's still around then. Oh, and I grew up listening to Its a Beautiful Day so I knew the song quite well already

elizabeth - That's what she said! Ha! Sorry...couldn't resist...Actually, I know a lot of bloggers to a certain degree but not nearly in the way some know each other...the gnomes like to keep me a bit mysterious, you know...

900 blog posts? Just this last year? And I'm only at 259 comments?

Yeesh.

Ha!

Opulently I acquiesce in but I dream the post should acquire more info then it has.

Beth said...

Let the games/comment count begin anew on VE's blog!
I still have people on my blog roll who have disappeared...always hoping...

subby said...

@Quirkyloon~ check this out for mega-posting....

I fell off the edge of the blogosphere in September. But I'm back!

What Megan said x 10!

angie said...

That's a lot of disappearances! And you noticed. I miss Arizona, too.

Quirkyloon said...

@Subby Dang! 5925 posts for 2009? Day-ang!

VE! You need to get to work!

subby said...

back @ Quirky...amazing? Isn't it?

VE, as fun as it is getting lost in your archives, I'd be more at home here...

subby said...

Whoops! I meant to do that. Here's where I wanted to go, heh, heh...

Gladys said...

And then you have ME. The one everyone WISHES, nay HOPES would disappear but continues on with her longwinded pointless stories.

Love Ya VE and yes many of the ones you mentioned are also ones I miss.

The upside maybe they will let Charlie Sheen have his own blog in prison. What do you think he would call it?
Excerpts from an angermaniac?

Amanda said...

Ah, man, there is a little dark cloud on this funny blog today. You're new to my reader and I'm catching up on posts today. I do admire the way you blog, though. There are lots of bloggers out there who probably wouldn't bother remembering who disappeared. Good for you! Now off to read more :)

VE said...

quirkyloon - No, that's all time for me. I have somewhat of a life. I mean...I have to take care of the gnomes you know...

anon - Opulently? Why I was just using that word in a run on sentence the other day....NOT!

beth - Hope to see you up there high again next year and not off to one of those month long cabin retreat to dance with the bears!

subby - That's sick!!! How can anyone post this much? Why would anyone try and read it? Crazy...

incredible woody - Yeah, what happened? I was hoping you'd make the 200 list this year...you might still make it...

perpetual - Agree!

angie - I do notice!

quirkyloon - There you go with that "work" thing...

subby - Looking for the Presidents book of secrets, eh?

gladys - Come on now gladys, we love your long winded posts and you're WAY up on my blog roll. Way up...

amanda - Welcome. I'd forgotten that I went blog surfing and found your blog the other day. Thanks for returning the favor!

I was really sad to see Kurt go frankly. I'd seen him comment on plenty of others and only really caught up with him just as he decided to fold. Still, I guess every blog has a use by date. I just wish those who decided to stop would at least let us know. I worry a little. Had one who disappeared after daily postings for over 12 months and none of her readers have a clue to where. Nice little rememberance VE, lets hope they're alive and well and have made some friends in the 'real' world!

Roy Scribner said...

It doesn't make any sense to stop commenting, here. I'm not the only one getting $5 a comment from you, right?

Maureen said...

Holy crap. $5 a comment? You're going to go broke VE... and I'm RICH! RICH! RICH!

I too am amazed at how you keep up. Not only with posting but with the blogs of others as well.

(Standing Ovation)

Mrsupole said...

Shhhhh, I am not going to tell anyone that I get $10 for each time I am first. I mean, what if it starts a riot here when the others find out.

But hey is Roy saying that you pay him $5 a comment, okay now I feel cheated. This is gonna have to take some calculations here to see who makes more. Although I only have to make half as many comments if I want to. But then look I did move up another spot to #11, so does that mean I get an honorable mention.

And it is so sad when other blogging friends just disappear and stop blogging. I have had a few who have done that and then months later let me know that they are still around. It is really nice to hear from them again.

So here is a toast to all those who have up and left us. "May all you are doing 'now' keep you healthy and well."

God bless.

Awww, this is really sweet.
So would you miss me if I mysteriously turned up missing too?

How about this afternoon when I took that unfortunately long bathroom break? Did you miss me then? Huh? Did you?

Actually, I've been sort of thinking lately... I have blog posts stored up ahead of time, pre-loaded and set to drop on certain times/dates. I've got them pre-loaded all the way through March 2010. I still sometimes have "fresh" posts I've written about things that happened that day; but a lot of it is just fun simple stuff I came up with and put on the waiting list.
So, this got me thinking... if I was to suddenly drop dead or get in an accident or get abducted by a feral tribe of Burger King employees, my readers wouldn't have any idea that anything was wrong. Everyone would think I was still alive and well, since my posts would keep dropping at their scheduled times, week after week.
People might (hopefully) become suspicious when it became apparent that I was no longer responding to comments...?
But the posts wouldn't quit showing up until March 2010... I could be dead and buried under an old french fry vat by then.

I hope people will miss me!

subby said...

VE, and then there are the bloggos with so many followers***cough~Barbara Walters**,***cough, cough 400,000+cough** they need a bloomin' army to screen it all! YIKES! Or so I've been told...

Mrsupole said...

Funny how Anon left the same message in your comments on your previous post. Here we go again, green eggs and spam. I just say delete, delete, delete. Have you thought about starting a "Spammer Hits" on your blog roll.

Okay, gonna go see what I can vote on right now.

God bless.

Well, after that eulogy, I definitely can't return to blogging.

I am Arizona; a person, not a place. said...

I think I shed a tear over this post. Either that or my damn contacts were just acting up again.

Thanks!

i hate when i find a blogger whose writing i love and then they disappear...sigh.

VE said...

baino - You mean my blog has a use by date too?

roy - Sure...but I may have to pay some in $1 bills because Monopoly only give me so many $5 bill in that game...

maureen - This is the most difficult time for me though. The whole reflection and transition to the new year is work. I'll be sending out a comment to each and every person on the blog roll here soon...

mrsupole - Here, here, I'll toast with you to them...(but not the $10...)

janna - That would be weird...you could do like a 100 years worth of posts...cool. But yes, I'd know there was something wrong because you never miss a single comment on here!!! Well done, indeed!!!

kurt - Doh! Sure you can...come on now, buck up to the pressure!

arizona - There you are! Warms my heart to see you visit again. The gnomes were so sad when you left...don't worry...they blamed me.

lime - It is sad...

Well, it's almost 1:00 a.m. on new years day where I am so I was hoping to be the first of the new year to comment but I have no idea since you've got readers from all different time zones. :) Doesn't matter if I'm the first though, I'm just glad to be here whenever I can because there's always something good going on at Fantastical Nonsense. :) Here's looking forward to another great year for you and for your blog! Thanks for all the smiles and laughs in 2009, too. You are appreciated.
