The Source of Inspiration

Ever wonder what the initial source of inspiration was to various songs? Perhaps clues can be ascertained from the very song itself. Let’s examine…

Ring of Fire Johnny Cash
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Johnny has a bad case of hemorrhoids when he wrote it

Ain’t No SunshineBill Withers
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Bill was laid up for a week in Portland, OR in November

Close to YouCarpenters
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: The brother sister act were on their first visit to Tokyo during rush hour on the subway train

Comfortably NumbPink Floyd
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Written when they were kids sitting through Accounting 101 class

Danny’s All Star Joint Ricky Lee Jones
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Danny was an old high school buddy that came from Humboldt County, California and had certain mind bending talents

Devil’s HaircutBeck
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Beck was obviously watching the Phil Specter trial and got inspired by Phil’s “hair of infinity” style

Dust in the WindKansas
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Written right after their first cremation spreading ceremony gone bad…ala Big Lebowski bad

Everyday is a Winding RoadSheryl Crow
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Obviously written after months of commuting back and forth from the city studio to her fancy beach house via Highway 1 in California

FlashdanceKim Carnes
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: An unfortunate incident during the latter part of the streaking craze in the 70s

Hungry Like a WolfDuran Duran
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: Written shortly after leaving their grand experimentation toward Vegan living at a remote spa retreat

I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking ForU2
VE’s Hypothesis on the source: They lost the car keys in the desert while shooting that photo with the Joshua Trees

Those are some great ideas and probably all the right reasons, but I heard they still haven't found what they were looking for and if Bono keeps wearing those glasses they never will. FOA

God bless.

really? If inspiration like this is all it takes to right a hit song, then we can all be songwriters!

I thought for sure The Carpenters' Close To You had a much more sinister inspiration.

I thought this was going to be a post about me.

well - I was a teenager in the eighties, and Flashdance is no song - it's a film. The Kim Carnes song from Flashdance is" I'll be here where the heart is " What is the deeper meaning of that?
love from ms annoying.. :o)

Now I can't get "Close to you" out of my head. How do birds suddenly appear on a subway train?

"Hungry Like The Wolf: Written shortly after leaving their grand experimentation toward Vegan living at a remote spa retreat"

It also sounds like me after my self-imposed vegetarian week last year.
Like a glutton for punishment, I'm thinking of trying it again soon.
Just one week, just for the heck of it.

What's that? I have "masochist" written on my forehead?

Yeah, probably.

trying to imagine kansas in the middle of a cremation spreading ceremony gone awry is cracking me up.

I watched one of those ash spreading ceremonies go bad at the beach. Not good.

How about Horse With No Name - was it they went for that donkey ride down the Grand Canyon?

I’m wondering what you could come up with for Do Wah Diddy by Manfred Mann? ;)

I always wondered how the people living next to crematoriums feel about it, breathing in all of those body particles.

Personally, I think you have a fetish for Phil Spectar's hair... just sayin'

VE said...

mrsupole - Maybe he doesn't have any eyes!!

tom - We can! Of course that doesn't mean it will be popular...

nessa - You think it's a stalking anthem?

kurt - You had hemmeroids?

monica - You call that a film? I thought it was a big music video...

mama-face - The birds have gotten lazy flying South now and so they commute on the subway for portions...

janna - That is punishment. A whole week? I'll warn the carrot community...

quirkyloon - I knew I'd get you a singin'...

lime - Karma chameleon? Isn't that "like" karma but then you get the flat time in the middle of nowhere anyway?

roy - That's easy...the 60s...

brian - I think that's why that song is so popular...we can all identify to losing the car keys...

elizabeth - I'm not implying that hemmeroids actually killed him though...

incredible woody - No wonder he found his own personal Jesus...

jaime - And that is why we call this place "fantastical nonsense"...

gladys - I was at an ash spreading at a city pier. It wasn't pretty...

beth - Do wah diddy? I refuse to acknowledge any Manfred Mann song other than Blinded by the Light (which was actually a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song)...

perpetual chocoholic - Second hand ash is a serious problem!

jenjen - Who has?

reforminggeek - U2 have a warm butt?

lifeshighway - Who wouldn't be inspired by the "hair of infinity"?

silver fox - You're probably right...

Catladylarew – I’m calling the Dean…

Maureen – “Her name was Rio and she’s holding the Olympic Games…” wait…those aren’t the words…

Gab – It’s a wonder they had time to write down the lyrics…

Chris – Equally too…
