It's hard to be first anymore

Being the first at anything is just getting harder and harder in a world with thousands of years of history and billions of people.

In the beginning it was easy…go outside and you’ve discovered something new. Travel a little bit and you’ve discovered a lake or an ocean or a new continent.

Of course, the original discoverers didn’t care about that and so when bored Europeans and Asians decided it was important and had to be written down for it to be real, they proceeded to discover all the same things again.

But as time went on it became harder and harder to discover much of anything. Continents gave way to obscure mountains, lakes or caves. Space is still viable but you have to devote your life to living under government funding to be able to discover anything there. Plus, who really wants to have to earn a PHD in physics just to do so!

Back on Earth it’s all in how you spin it. From the tallest tree to the tallest specific type of tree to the tallest specific type of tree growing within an urban setting to the tallest tree specific type of tree growing within an urban setting that hasn’t been climbed by a kid.

Ah, the need to be first. Uggh.

First on the post about being first:)

Be careful what you "ask for". You could be the first person to see some rare, exotic species and it could be the last thing you ever do.

I know you, VE. Don't go to the Amazon, 'K?

First. Ha. I'd rather be fourth.

Fifth.

Sixth! I've never been first anywhere anyhow, so it's no big deal for me.

7th. whoopie shit

Eighth! If you think about it, some 'firsts' can be bettered. Take the mouse trap, for instance...

9th? Ah well nobody remembers who comes second, let alone 9th, surprised I bothered really.

Sometimes one gets to be first for so long that one figures it is time to share, well mostly because it is very lonely at the top. Geez, that sure does sound good but one can also just give up trying because one gets bored when no one else plays. But being last is even harder than being first.
And being first and last, well that is a real accomplishment.

But it is the hardest to work at being in the middle of the pack, but this is where one has the most fun and one is never lonely. The middle is the happening place and there is less work to be done. The middle is the Fun Zone. That's my new story and I'm at sticking to it.

God bless.

If you could find my carpet under all the toys and clothes and things, that would be a first!

But statisticians looove stuff like this...just sayin'...

What's more fun is watching all these "educated" profs and docs, as they scramble to re-write history, with every "new" find...

Incredible woody – It’s a monumental first to be first on my first “first” post…

Reforminggeek – I need to go…must go…must…whew…thanks for keeping me away from the Amazon again. I’ve only been there twice and no catastrophes (unless you count that time the plane was on fire while flying over it…of course)

Sharonheg – Well, on the positive side you don’t have to stand below the other winners and wear a heavy medal around your neck…

Perpetual chocoholic – Are you sure…I count fourth…

Roy – That’s the ticket…set expectations to the right low level and you’ll always be happy…

Tom – Seven is lucky. Technically you’re sixth, but we won’t tell anyone…

00dozo – Just don’t ask the mouse…

Baino – I remember Steve Prefontaine got fourth place in the 1972 Olympics…how’s that?

Mrsupole – Of course then again, the middle is what is always ejected from corporations. Let’s face it…you can’t win no matter where you place…

Elizabeth – Look at the bright side…if you can’t see it, you don’t have to vacuum it…

Subby – They do…but who really wants to listen to a statistician?

Subby – History is about 50% fiction…why do they keep putting the books in the non-fiction side?

Roy – Technically you posted exactly at 5:00am, not after so I’m going to have to strip you of your first medal. We’ll send you a box to ship it back in…

Subby – I saw that one…scary!

Gab – But you were first from South Dakota to comment on my blog…that’s something!

Yay! I'm 18th! I'm 18th!
I've always wanted to be 18th!
In fact, I...

Eh. Who am I kidding.

We underachievers are happy just being on the list at all.

Please pass the chocolate.

VE, H.G.Wells came pretty close; but it's out-dated, of course ( by about 80 years! )

And sorry, didna mean to scare ya on that, heh, heh...the gnomes made me link up! It was them! I swear!

Woo hoo! 12th, 13th, 15th, 19th & 20th! Did I win anything?

You have to get up pretty early to be first at VE's house! I'm a day late and a dollar short... again!

I felt the need to be last. Seeing how this is Wednesday, I've probably succeeded.

Janna – “I’m in the phone book, I’m in the phone book”…classic line from “The Jerk”. Yes, underachievement is underrated…

Subby – Good one…I blame the gnomes for pretty much everything…

Subby – You get another lame reply. Sorry, they’re not transferrable or redeemable for anything…

Sans Pantaloons – That is incredible. Must be that secret alphabet that exists in between our normal alphabet that you can only get with digital…

Catladylarew – Just don’t wake me up if you do get their that early…

Dennis – You should be a statistician!

Monkey man – Just when you think you’re last, somebody comes along later and ruins it. It’ll probably be some spam comment too…

i would say which place i came in, but i can't count that high...

Being first is way overrated! Now being one millionth?

Confetti.

Lots of it.

*smile*

aladdinsane - You were setting fire to the school during the counting lesson, weren't you?

quirkyloon - Can you imagine me trying to reply to a million people reading this blog? I'd have to make the gnomes do it...and they're much more ridiculous than I am with their responses...

guess i'll just be content to make comment #30
